A Tyne and Wear man arrested after calling a police officer a “lesbian” has been given a 12-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to using homophobic language and threatening behaviour.

South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard Kevin Bain, of Whiteleas, South Shields, was drunk at the time of the incident.

Officers had been called to a house in the Whiteleas area of South Shields, following reports Bain had been kicking and banging on a door.

The Shields Gazette says the 29-year-old was sitting on the doorstep with a can of lager when officers got there; he was told to leave.

But instead of leaving, Bain swore at them and called a female officer a “lesbian” and made other offensive remarks.

Stan Sudworth, prosecuting, said: “When he was arrested and taken to the police station, Bain apologised and said he shouldn’t have been homophobic.”

Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He was living at the address.

“He accepts he used the language, but has told me one of the police officers swore at him as well.

“He apologised when he got to the police station.”

Magistrates gave Bain a 12-month conditional discharge.
