US TV star Ellen DeGeneres is developing a sitcom featuring a lesbian lead character.

The actress and comedian is working with NBC and writer Liz Feldman on the new project – although it’s understood DeGeneres will not personally appear on screen in the series.

DeGenres and Feldman will executive produce the untitled show, which centres on a lesbian woman who gets pregnant with her straight male best friend just as he meets his soul mate and gets married.

Feldman previously worked with DeGeneres on her hit talk show and wrote for her first stint as Oscar host in 2007.

The 55-year-old has already been announced as the host for the 2014 Academy Awards, which will take place on 2 March 2014 in Los Angeles.

DeGeneres revealed her sexual orientation on her ABC sitcom Ellen in 1997. Her coming out paved the way for more lesbian characters to appear on US primetime television.
