  1. That There Other David 23 Oct 2013, 2:46pm

Indeed. As the first secular university to have been founded in the UK UCL is spitting in the eyes of its founders with this move into an ultra-religious country. They may as well drag Bentham’s body out of the box and kick it around the Cruciform Building. It would be just as insulting to what UCL is supposed to stand for.

The current Vice-Chancellor should hang his head in shame.

My best mate works at UCL (he’s straight but very gay-friendly — obviously, with a gay man as his best friend). I just forwarded this to him with the hope that he can bring it to some allies’ attention. Hopefully, some good will come of it.

  3. I’m an academic at another leading university. My boss is pushing the idea of teaching courses in Saudi Arabia. I’m horrified for all the same reasons as those set out in this article.

  4. But what if opening this university actually modernizes people in those countries and makes the newer generation who studies there more gay friendly ?
    could that happen ?

    1. Cross-fertilisation of many kinds could happen.

    Should have gone to Imperial….

  6. I thought UCL was better than this :(

What else are they compromising on, they should insist on the minimum of conforming with UNUDHR and Qatar does not conform to the basics. Shame.

  7. The old saying is something like “Infiltrate, and THEN deviate.” But it’s difficult in this situation to discern who is infiltrating who.

  8. Same ethics as LSE.
