  1. It may not be human right for gay or straight couples to adopt, but it is right that they should be able to.

The children that need adoption, need loving, stable homes and this should be the priority. Not the sexuality of those looking to adopt.

Mr Poots should not be in the position he is in. He is using is ill judged religion to dictate policies and is also wasting public money on a case (I hope) that he will lose.

Should he lose, I sincerely hope that he is removed his position. Heck, he should be removed anyway.

Religion should have no place in politics.

  2. holding these view how can gay people in NI ever receive equal treatment? Shame on you minister your happy to take the golden shilling from gay taxes still.

(Pink News please sort out the landing page is a total mess)

  3. Colin (london) 7 Oct 2013, 2:57pm

He doesn’t know his arse from his elbow eh. I hope the supreme court will move this on and allow children to be raised in loving, stable homes of same or different sexes.

It is about the children and not religious dogma.

This man should be sacked as he is harping back to the bad old days of abuse, control, hatred and shame.

    He is a dinosaur.

  4. It is becoming statistically certain almost that these evangelicals who are vehemently publicly opposed to Gay rights are exposed as gay themselves. Gays, whether L-G-B or T have the right to be parents biologically and they retain that RIGHT to adopt. If these funds are being allocated in an inappropriate manner, or in a manner ill-advised by the Civil service, then he should be personally surcharged for the recoup of the funds, indeed if this legal action is pointless then upon his own resources should fall the bill.

  5. Jug-eared halfwit

    1. Yep. I refuse to take ‘orders’ from anyone who has such a ridiculous name. Edwin Poots – WTF were his parents thinking?

Looks like a moron, sounds like a moron.

  6. “Mr Poots believes the majority of people in Northern Ireland remain opposed to adoption rights for same-sex couples”

And that justifies illegal discrimination since when?

  7. James Savik 7 Oct 2013, 3:13pm

Poots? His is bloody name is Poots?

Well of course it is.It’s always some Evangelical old fart.

  8. Beelzeebub 7 Oct 2013, 3:24pm

    Edwin Poots.

    Anagrams to “Dope It Owns”

    How apt.

  9. so what? it’s a human right to let foster kids live in an over crowded system than with a loving family…regardless how the family is made up of? what a doosh rag! @jimbryant…yer a waste of space…PERIOD!

  10. john lyttle 7 Oct 2013, 3:43pm

I predict that in ten years time Poots children will appear in a primetime ITV documentary telling the world about how daddy snuck into their rooms at night and touched them in their Special Places. It’s always the evangelists…

  11. … and it is not a human right for heterosexual couples to adopt a child – is it? This vile homophobe, like so many in Northern Ireland, have been brainwashed by their religion and they find it impossible to shake-off the hatred. Well, times have changed. YOU, sir, are a dinosaur with an attitude problem. YOU are out of step if you would rather kids be left to grow-up in care rather than go to a loving family – gay or not. This man should be sacked and sent for some re-education.

  12. Read the article, then saw the minister’s name and picture and started uproariously laughing. In the U.S., poot is slang for the sound made by or the name for…a fart. Methinks the Poot (waves hand in front of nose) doth protest too loudly.

  13. Edwin Poofs is really a bit too obsessive about gay issues, it’s making me think he has personal issues he needs to urgently address .

    1. Nail-on-head. “Show me a homophobe; I’ll show you a closet case”. These people will use ANYTHING (bible, history, fear) to attack gay people as a means of convincing THEMSELVES that being gay is a ‘sin’ … because they are so eaten-up with the guilt about their own suppressed thoughts and feelings. The way to combat these GMIDs (Gay Men In Denial) is to take every opportunity to ask them WHY they are so obsessed with the subject? Normal heterosexual men would NEVER spend so much of their time in thought about what gay men get up to, would they? Their total preoccupation is a DEAD giveaway as to the true motivation behind their homophobia.

  14. I dont think he should be allowed to breed. Not that any woman or man would ever want a piece of him. He may have luck among the canines though.

    1. Unfortunately he has 4 children. Those who believe the earth is only 4000 years old, as Poots does, tend to reproduce rather too generously.

  15. Every child has the human right to be raised in a loving environment of parents. This irrelevant of the orientation of the parents. To deny these children this fundamental human right and instead keep them in state orphanages is a travesty. These so-called high and mighty godly straight people have reckless behaviour that produces unplanned children on a regular basis. Someone has to clean up the mess they leave behind. These have absolutely no room to talk.

  16. It makes one wonder how such an ignoramus came to be a Health Minister!

  17. On the point that it is not a human right he is correct. No person has the right to adopt a child so that argument does succeed. What fails however is the discrimination based on sexual orientation and marital status. This is especially likely to be struck down by the Supreme Court. It might be the thing needed to get Northern Ireland to move forward with LGBT rights and introduce equal marriage legislation.

    1. I doubt they’ll move forward very fast. Anywhere that has been so divided by religion is bound to be entrenched in the past. If people have been playing the ‘my god is better than your god’ game for centuries, it takes several generations – if ever – for people to live in harmony once the fighting is over. Hopefully, the people of NI are sick of religion causing such divisions. They must now start to see that ‘faith’ has been responsible for all their ills and that, as deference for religion wanes, they can move into the 21st Century without the dreadful sectarianism that has been responsible for so much death and destruction.

  18. Staircase2 7 Oct 2013, 5:26pm

He’s talking out of his arse; it IS a Human Right

See Universal Declaration of Human Rights (especially arts 7 & 16)

  19. Classic strawman. No-one, that I am aware of, is arguing that anyone has a ‘right’ to adopt. But neither Mr Poots nor anyone else surely has a right to deny adoption on the basis of social and religious prejudices unrelated to empirical and rationally interpreted evidence regarding the needs of children.
But such considerations are unimportant to religious bigots. It’s basically why they are mad and dangerous.

  20. Of course it’s not any old couple’s human right to be able to adopt a child, there should be various criteria that must be met in order to ensure the child is going to a safe, stable and caring home – but when perfectly sufficient & suitable same-sex couples who are eager to become parents like most other people are banned outright, then we have a problem. That is not quite right. No matter what your view on why homosexuality happens: the evidence is there to suggest children raised by same-sex couples fair just as well, if not better, than those raised by straight couples. In fact, many believe taking care of neglected offspring is a valuable & important role for homosexuality in the species & our societies, & it makes no sense to deny children the chance to have loving, professional parents who are eager for them to succeed & have a chance at life, instead of being left to rot in the system & be systematically deprived of opportunity or prosperity they would otherwise have access to.

  21. ….he is amazingly ugly, I’ve seen better heads on boils!!! OMG! who made him gods gift to manhood anyway? And lastly who on earth does he think he is–how does he know it’s not a given human right for Gays to adopt kids..?? You are talking out of your behind…..!

  22. No it may not be – but loving gay couples can clear up the mess you vile hetero bigots have created by religious restrictions on a woman’s human right to choose – so shut up whinging and help solve the problem of unwanted children that the catholic church has caused – by providing a stable – evolved family for these children!

  23. I agree that it’s not a human right to be able to adopt.
However, all should have the right to apply for adoption and be considered on equal terms.

Poots’ argument in this is feeble, as his previous ones on LGBT subjects have been. I would like to see him get more air-time putting his falacious arguments across as with each one he drives another nail into his coffin-entombed career and is shown for the bigot he is.

As others have said previously, he should be ejected from office because of his flagrant constant mis-use of public funds to promote his personal discriminatory ravings.

One final point. . . It makes me cringe to see postings here calling him names because of his appearance or name. It’s childish, insulting to us all, and detrimental to the argument here.

  24. Article 16 of the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

“(1) Men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and to found a family. They are entitled to equal rights as to marriage, during marriage and at its dissolution.
    (2) Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.
    (3) The family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by society and the State.”

As you can see, this article does not specify whether or not a marriage is between a man and a woman, just that the marriage must be between two consenting adults, and that any married couple is entitled to a family. For many couples, gay or straight, adoption is the only way to have a family. Therefore adoption is a human right, provided you meet all the necessary criteria that any other adoptive parent must meet.

  25. Mumbo Jumbo 7 Oct 2013, 7:50pm

It is a child’s human right to grow up in a loving home. It is not a human right to deny them this by self-indulgently imposing your chosen religious prejudice on the rest of society.

  26. Wow, another DUP homophobic asshole! Now that they can no longer get away with discriminating against Catholics and Nationalists, they’ve moved onto gays and racial minorities. Yes Mr. Poots there’s a reason why your sham of a party has little credence up there and whilst you’re at it you may want to stop obsessing over gays since it says more about you and your cronies than it does about us! Asshole!

  27. I’m so glad I’m leaving NI for good this week, with all the religious nutters holding public office. The fact this blatant discrimination is still allowed to go on in this day and age says it all really. NI will always be be a backward hellhole, and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the UK want nothing to do with them.

  28. “It is not a human right to adopt a child for either a mixed-sex couple or a same-sex couple.”

The above is not an argument for withholding adoption rights only from same sex couples.

  29. What a disgusting homophobic piece of filth! Deport him to Saudi Arabia!
