Ed Miliband’s new shadow cabinet has been revealed, and the new Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities is former journalist Gloria de Piero.
Ms de Piero, MP for Ashfield, is the former political editor of GMTV, and former Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention. Ms de Piero replaces Yvette Cooper as the Minister with the Women and Equalities brief for the Labour party.
She was elected to the Ashfield seat in 2010 by a narrow margin after leaving her career in journalism behind.
Despite the measure being voted down, Ms de Piero voted in favour of amending the Children and Families Bill to include statutory Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, making it mandatory for teachers to inform students about same-sex relationships.
In 2008, the Bradford-born MP was voted the 85th sexiest woman in the world by FHM magazine’s readers’ poll.
She is married to The Guardian’s former media correspondent, James Robinson. She sits on the Strategy Board of Progress, the left-wing think-tank.
Yvette Cooper, MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, remains the Shadow Home Secretary.
