Police in Texas are treating a vicious attack on a young gay man as a possible hate crime.

Aaron Keahey, from Springtown northern Texas, was left with broken facial bones, nerve damage and missing teeth.

The 24-year-old, who’s since been discharged from hospital, was ambushed after meeting an 18-year-old suspect on a phone app called MeetMe.

WFAA-TV reports the attack happened earlier this month on Labor Day, a public holiday in the US.

Mr Keahey is gay and said he went to the suspect’s house in Springtown thinking he was either gay or bisexual. He said the ambush happened immediately.

“He started getting all frustrated and talking all angrily,” Mr Keahey said. “I don’t remember anything after that.”

Police said they received a 911 call from Brice Johnson,18, who told officers he found the victim outside his house in the boot of a car. Mr Johnson said he drove Mr Keahey to get medical assistance.

Police later arrested Mr Johnson and charged him with aggravated assault, causing serious bodily injury.
