A man has been hit in the face with a bottle in Edinburgh in what police are treating as a homophobic attack.

The 27-year-old man had been at CC Blooms, a gay bar in Edinburgh city centre, before the attack, which occurred just after 1am on Sunday morning.

The man and his partner left the bar before walking home along London Road and Easter Road. As they approached the first bus stop on Easter Road, they saw a man walking towards them holding a bottle.

After a confrontation, during which the man made homophobic remarks, he threw a bottle at the couple, which hit the 27-year-old victim on the face before smashing on the ground.

The attacker ran off towards London Road. He is described as white, in his early 20s, 5ft 10ins tall with broad shoulders, light dirty blonde hair, a clean-shaven round face and Scottish accent. He was wearing a dark woollen round neck jumper.

Police are treating the incident as a homophobic hate crime, and DC Chris Harding said: “This attack left the victim with cuts to his face and the possibility of permanent scarring. We are treating it as a homophobic attack and are keen to trace any witnesses to this incident, or anyone who recognised the description of the attacker.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
