Gay actor Jim Parsons wins best comedy actor Emmy for Big Bang Theory

Jim Parsons won another Emmy award on Sunday evening, taking home the best comedy category at this year’s showbiz event in LA.

The 40-year-old plays awkward scientist Dr Sheldon Cooper in the hit CBS comedy show The Big Bang Theory.  

He previously won the same award in 2010 and 2011 for his role as Sheldon.

Parsons ended his acceptance speech by thanking boyfriend Todd Spiewak who he called his “favourite person on the planet.”

The actor went public about his sexuality in May 2012.

Meanwhile, comedy show Modern Family, which features a gay couple as two of the central characters, won the best comedy award.

Behind the Candelabra, the film about iconic gay pianist Liberace starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, won three Emmys, including one for best TV movie.

Douglas took home the best movie actor category.
