A 22-year-old man in the northern French city of Alencon has been jailed for attacking his new husband just hours after tying the knot.

On what should have been a day of wedding bless, Sapa-AFP reports the victim said he was head-butted and then repeatedly hit whilst lying on the ground in an attack which followed a heavy drinking session.

The incident was apparently triggered by a row about the respective mother-in-laws.

The victim appealed on the court to show leniency towards his new spouse, who also attacked two police officers, however the defendant was given a two-year prison term, six months of which were suspended.

A law granting same-sex couples the right to marry and adopt children was passed by the French Parliament in May.
