Simon Cowell has joked that he would have been richer if he’d dated men because the women in his life have cost him so much money.

“I said to someone the other day that I wish I had been born gay. I would have saved a fortune,” the Daily Star reports the 53-year-old pop mogul as saying.

The X Factor boss is expecting his first child with Lauren Silverman. Cowell has previously struck up a romance with TV presenter Terri Seymour, pop singer Sinitta and make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy, but instead of ending on sour terms, Cowell regular socialises with them on holiday.

Speaking in an interview hosted by Terri Seymour, when she asked if he had ever feared bankruptcy, he said: ”Yes, particularly when I’ve had girlfriends like you lot!

”I said to someone the other day that I wish I had been born gay. I would have saved a fortune.”

In April, Cowell told the Radio Times: “I couldn’t care less (if people think I’m gay) because it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It feels like such an antiquated question now.”

Asked if he minded when people pondered when he is “coming out”, he said: “If I was living 200 years ago in a coal mine, maybe, but I work in possibly the gayest industry in the world! Music and TV!

“It would make no difference to my life or my career. A lot of my friends are gay, but I’m not and don’t even think that way anymore.”
