  1. I think the world is a better place for us if more people are out – when we are visible, when people realise that we are their family, their friends, their colleague, teammate, doctor, teacher etc then the lies and slanders about us tend to evaporate in the cleansing light of day.

However, I would also argue that coming out is a deeply personal journey that everyone must make in their own time.

I don’t blame him for his choices although I might wish they were different.

Problem for actors? Proving illegal bias (assuming say UK or Canada) is difficult, no casting company will say “too gay” when they can come up with any number of other excuses to determine whether someone is suited for a role, an ephemeral concept in and of itself.

That people assume LGBT can’t play straight is, of course, nonsense. It’s called “acting” after all. But the argument becomes circular because this belief would change with more out actors.

Just glad he survived his teens and made a stand.

    1. Well said, Valksy – totally agree with all your points.

        For once, so do I.

  2. Wow – impressive – really really so needed to see and hear this – Thank You Mr. Miller. Thank you so much.

  3. …and p.s. the Moral Contrast between Wentworth millers leadership and example with that of the self serving willing foolishness of Johnny Weir could not be more stark.

  4. Did it really count as ‘lying’ about his sexuality simply because he didn’t talk about it when being interviewed about work? Unless he was directly asked about romance and gave answers indicating he was looking for a woman, I say no.

    1. He explicitly said in 2007 that he wasn’t gay, but didn’t care who people pictured him with. Like a lot of people denying, for whatever reason, I’m guessing that has weighed on him since.

      1. Thanks, had not heard about that. It must have made him feel pretty rotten inside. I guess at least it wasn’t Will Young class – singing about women, giving the names of women celebs when asked his ideal date, etc.

  5. It’s telling that while campaigning for the freedom of gay people in Russia he didn’t feel particularly comfortable in his own country.

  6. You are admired Wentworth and I for one love your dignity.

  7. A very powerful and moving speech from Wentworth. So glad he realised there is a ‘we’ and ‘us’ and no just ‘I’ and ‘me’

I felt very much the same myself for a long time and it’s a damned lonely place to be!
