Rapper A$AP Rocky has addressed the controversy surrounding his appearance with openly gay basketball star Jason Collins at the MTV VMA awards.

The pair introduced Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s performance at the awards ceremony last month, but the rapper drew criticism following his seemingly awkward response to Collins’ speech about accepting homosexuality.

The rap star’s reaction led to viewers creating a string of online memes, videos and criticism.

Speaking to The Stashed, Rocky apologised for the incident, stating: “I’m mad my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing came off real homophobic.

“I didn’t really notice it until I got home and saw it. I apologise to Jason for that, because people was laughing and s**t and you know… I don’t really think that’s funny.

“I saw they were making all the memes and all the pictures and making fun of him. There’s people out there that think I was doing it to be funny, and truthfully I got gay people in my family.

“I don’t give a f*ck if you gay or not, I just found it odd that MTV wanted me to stand next to this n***a when they are talking about gay people, that’s all. You know what I’m saying?”

When asked about Collin’s sexuality back in May, Rocky said that he “respects men more for coming out.”

The star has spoken out about homosexuality in the past, saying that “it’s crazy” that it’s still an issue in the music industry.

The rapper has also been involved in an online feud with fellow hip-hop star Azealia Banks, who told Rocky to “come out the closet” after remarks he made about her choice of lipstick.

Rapper Lil’ Wayne has also voiced his support for Jason Collins, saying that by coming out Collins was “opening a lot of doors” for gay people.
