Aah. Bless her! The poor dear. She’ll probably be dead before she’s repaid the money. Someone should organise a whip round for her.Pronto!

    1. I am sure there are many people with misplaced loyalty who would love to pay off his criminal debts. How much are you donating?

No doubt there will soon be a book out and a massive profit to be made at our expense.

      1. Staircase2 30 Aug 2013, 6:37pm

Your name really is rather apt isn’t it…

        …UKIP or Tory…?

        1. Neither as you ask? But I am happy for you to comment on here without impugning your good name.

I worked full time for over twenty years, had a nervous breakdown and when I signed on they cut my benefit totally after 6 months as it was contributions based. Because I had a partner in work I was entitled to absolutely nothing.

In other words the more you pay the less you get. So yes it does p+ss me off when people defraud the system.

  3. john lyttle 30 Aug 2013, 3:12pm

Please tell me he turned up in court looking like that.

  4. Poor Betty…x

    1. Not so poor with £6000 in illegal benefit.

      1. Staircase2 30 Aug 2013, 6:39pm

Someone on Benefits living with an alleged ‘extra’ £1500 PER YEAR is hardly living in the lap of luxury are they…

Perhaps you should put your copy of the Daily Mail down long enough to wake up and smell some coffee…

        1. “alleged”? He has just been convicted so let’s get rid of the “alleged”.

The Daily Mail would love all the supportive comments on here showing the gay community in a great light.

          1. The point being that he was prosecuted for trying to live on a very very low income. Illegal it may have been technically, but its proves the law is an ass. The poor man got a total of £7500 a year and lived in a shelter.

If he was straight and popped out a child he would have got double or triple, no questions asked.

  5. ‘Townsend, who has had a double hip replacement and suffers from a heart murmur, is still working as a drag queen in Brighton’

Never ever give up dear despite the odds.

  6. Chubbybear 30 Aug 2013, 5:50pm

I name our car Betty after her.. Mind you that’s not the only thing she done in the past

  7. Terry stewart 30 Aug 2013, 5:52pm

And big multi national finance institutions which bankrupted the economy, walk scot free and go on to sponsor London Corporate Pride. We certainly have our priorities the wrong way around. We should help this poor drag queen.

    1. He stole money from people less fortunate than himself. Benefit fraud is one of the most disgusting crimes. People like him also give a bad name to people who have to resort to legally claiming benefit.

“Living in a hostel”? With £6000 of our money?

      1. sounds like your jealous

        1. Thanks for your insightful contribution.

      2. Six grand over a year.

That hardly pays for a cardboard box over your head in Brighton plus having the luxury of eating and heating.

He IS one of the less fortunate you talk about.

If you desire to criticize anyone have a hard look at your politicians and bankers milking billions for themselves.

Personally, I lost a the lower part of my leg last year due to a DVT, and still work but I have always worked due to the line of work I work in. Well paid IT.

This individual performs in pubs dressed in drag for pennies so hold out some empathy before you start arrogant criticism.

    2. Staircase2 30 Aug 2013, 6:40pm

      Well said, Terry

      This is outrageous

  8. why is every one accepting that its ok to commit fraud….strange…..

    1. Staircase2 30 Aug 2013, 6:43pm

They’re not – they’re questioning that this is, in any REAL sense of the word, actually ‘Fraud’ to start with…

MPs were regularly STEALING expenses money in order to purchase WHOLE HOUSES – whereas this poor sod can barely afford to live in a hostel and you think that constitutes ‘fraud’…?!

      1. Thats ok then….lets all do it…..

        1. its not a case of lots all do that people are REALLY struggling to make ends meet -what a disgrace we need food banks in the country – we look after our old people here so badly and yet happy to spend millions on others like hook and that other hate preacher who went off to Jordan. We time we look after people here then maybe they wouldn’t feel they would to work without declaring. It nothing compared to what MPs bankers have taken and they have not come before the courts

          1. You’ve swallowed the con about food banks then. People who smoke, drink and have 50 inch tellies but cannot afford to eat It’s what is called modern poverty.

            Try being poor in India.

  9. Staircase2 30 Aug 2013, 6:34pm

    This is preposterous
    £6,000 ‘fraud’ over a FOUR YEAR PERIOD…?!
If he’s been claiming Housing Benefit AND other Benefits it sounds like either he’s been claiming next to no money at all for rent or he’s been SAVING THE COUNTRY MONEY…

That he’s been only been paid £25 for a performance is the real fraud as far as I can tell

    1. George of George Street ,Kemptown 31 Aug 2013, 3:31am

£25 per night is way too much .He is a revolting character, alcoholic, nasty and quite devoid of any talent at all.To be fair he probabaly was on the wrong benefits,as he has health problems. He has spent so much time being obnoxious – someone probably reported him :-/ !

    2. Let’s give him a knighthood then, the guy must be a hero.

  10. maybe people should be asking why he was unable to own up to earning a few quid on the side -all the money the MPs bankers taken and nothing has happen to them – all these large corporations who use legal loopholes to avoid paying tax nothing happen to them

Glad its all over for Betty

    1. George of George Street,Kemp town 31 Aug 2013, 3:36am

That ‘Betty’ is a Ghastly Creature :-) !

  11. Derek Williams 30 Aug 2013, 10:47pm

    Swollocks is Bollocks.

Fraud is not good publicity for LGBT no matter how you look at it.

    1. Fraud is among white black old young council private professional manuals is has no boundaries

  12. You gotta love some of the comments on here …truly they are totally priceless.

Do people want to know why there are so many on benefits who will if they can try and get away with a few cash in hand jobs.

    1) The rising cost of rent
    2) The rising cost of gas and electricity
    3) The rising cost of food
    4) The rising cost of just about everything you can think of!!!!

Also it’s amazing how some people have kicked up such a fuss about Betty when their own MP’s throughout this country have fraudulently taken money from the public purse …you know …OUR money and with this they have paid for second homes, for their moats to be built. Christ these people don’t even have to pay Council Tax and in most cases claim back on their freaking food!!!!

Where is the uproar about those rich criminals I ask you?!

    1. I think you must have missed the months of uproar about MP’s expenses, do you not read the press or watch a TV. It was wall to wall for months.

Some of them went to prison, those that were convicted of fraud.

So presumably you think if everyone is doing it we might as well all do it. I can only assume that all those supporting Betty on hear either don’t pay tax or are on benefits themselves otherwise it makes no sense at all.

If this was a homophobic mullah defrauding £6000 of benefits I wonder if you would all be saying good for him what about the bankers and MP’s.

    2. Superb post Sarah….many thanks for putting things in perspective. X

  13. double hip replacement and a heart murmur and aged 62 – he ought to be on ESA not JSA – in which case he is ALLOWED to work part time and not lose benefits.

    1. Everyone done for fraud suddenly becomes ill.

      1. Ben Foster 31 Aug 2013, 7:18pm

you have a very nasty attitude towards the poor.

  14. Wow, usually benefit fraudsters that make the headlines are the serious deal but this just seems like one big misunderstanding. I think a, “stop working for money or lose your benefits, don’t do it again” attitude was more required than a “I’m going to throw the book at you and knock your hip replacement out of line” sort of come-back. I guess the law’s the law, but it seems very harsh.

    1. They are always a big misunderstanding. If you are a defence lawyer.

      1. you are quite bitter about this aren’t you

whatever you think of him he is hardly a big time career criminal, so just lighten up will ya

        1. got nothing against him just the idiots on here who think it is fine to break the law as long as you are a drag queen.

As I said above if it was a homophobic mullah defrauding the same money would you all be saying the same thing?

          No you wouldn`t.

          1. Ben Foster 1 Sep 2013, 12:54pm

I’d defend any over 60s partially disabled person from the likes of you, twitless, and your Daily Mail attitude.

  15. What an ulgy old Queen.

  16. I think it fair to say that Betty mad a mistake in not declaring some very limited and sporadic earnings whilst claiming some (also limited) benefits.
However, I think it only fair to point out that he also does a lot of good. He always gives his time and talent for free when asked to do so to raise money through charity events and has easily helped to raise literally tens of thousands of pounds (probably more) for local and worldwide charities over his career as Betty. This is not a bad person. This is a good person who did a silly thing.

    1. Ben Foster 1 Sep 2013, 5:58pm

that’s a decent thing to say, putting it into perspective.

  17. This story seems more a case of survival. Working very sporadically & for cap money & going on & off benefits between jobs….just so easy to & too tempting to continue claiming.

From what i understand this man was NOT living in any sort of luxury…was.just survival.

My recent ex had tax advise to help him dodge tax that he should have paid…but people like him who.has.plenty of spare cash get away with it.!

  18. she didn’t even make enough to pay fer a good wig…the courts should show her some mercy at the least…and a new stylist pronto!
