London vigil for murdered Jamaican trans teenager

A vigil will be held next week at the Jamaican Embassy in London in memory of transgender teenager Dwayne Jones.

The 16-year-old was stabbed multiple times and shot at a party in the Jamaican suburban parish of St James last month.

So far no one has been charged in relation to the killing.

At least nine homophobic or transphobic killings occurred in Jamaica last year.

The Out and Proud Diamond Group (OPDG), in association with the Peter Tatchell Foundation, have arranged for a protest to be held outside the Jamaican Embassy on Exhibition Road, Knightsbridge, to honour the life of Dwayne Jones.

OPDG’s Marvin Kibuuka said to PinkNews.co.uk: “It is a tragedy to lose a life because of someone’s gender. Dwayne Jones’ brutal murder is highly condemned in the strongest terms.

“Let’s stand up and fight persecution of LGBT/Q people in Jamaica and all over the world. The Jamaican government should not only condemn the murder of Dwayne Jones but also strive to protect the rights of the LGBTI/Q people in Jamaica”.

The protest starts at 4pm on Wednesday 28 August.
