  1. How about going one better and exclude any country in which homosexuality is illegal, or restricts the rights of its LGBT citizens, from participating in the Olympics.

Now THAT I would like to see.

      I strongly second that!

      1. It’s a nice idea, but the prospect of the IOC taking a moral stand on anything seems fanciful. Like most sporting bodies it exists to make a few people very wealthy, in no small part thanks to its official partnerships with countless companies with appalling human rights records while at the same time banning its athletes from making “political statements”. It seems not all political statements are equal.

Also, I’ve repeatedly raised this regarding a boycott of the Sochi Olympics, but what about us? Does our involvement and support for various tyrannies around the world mean we should be boycotted too? It seems to me that most talks of boycotts occur when countries tyrannise their own population, inflicting evil on (mainly) foreign countries seems to have absolved the West from these sorts of campaigns.

What about the World Cup in South Africa? Where the legal rights of LGBT citizens outstrips our own, yet official indifference to appalling living conditions and abuses is damning.

        1. Although it would be nice to see I do realise it is just wishful thinking.

I agree that the IOC is totally corrupt and devoid of any real principles.

I also agree with the other points you made particularly regarding western countries culpability. However. I think some people just seem to ignore this.

          1. To be clear, I wasn’t hectoring you or Robert at all, just venting like usual :-) It really is a nice thought that these sporting bodies could grow some guts but alas.

For the record, Madrid is awesome and should have first refusal of all major events. Always, for ever.

Even the British grand prix and the Ashes.

          2. No problem…I didn’t take it as such. :)

    1. I’m not too sure why this comment has received several ‘down’ votes. I would have thought that improving and equalizing human rights for all citizens is important in any county. I suppose it’s not overly relevant to the article but nevertheless.

I’ve signed and shared this petition! My partner is Romanian, so improving LGBT rights and changing the attitudes of Romanian people, (especially in the more rural communities where homophobia is rife) is something I care very much about!

      1. Sounds like Spam or Phishing or a worm or virus

  3. Madrid seems great just wondering if they will be able to afford it?

They are still paying for the 2004 Games in Greece so will it be wise for Spain to host the Games when you considered that given their economic situation they will be paying their debts for years to come?

      1. Gabriel F.Cornejo 27 Aug 2013, 9:00pm

Madrid has to build only 1/4 of the infrastructure and buildings.
Which means that the money is not the problem, regarding that Spanish economy has begun to grow.
Also the benefits that the games are expected to bring are something that will help this recovery.

The other candidate cities for the 2020 Olympics are Istanbul and Tokyo. Japan hosted the games in Tokyo in 1964 and Spain hosted them relatively recently with Barcelona in 1992. Turkey, and in fact, no Muslim majority country has ever hosted the Games. Given the attitudes of most Islamic countries towards their LGBT populations I will not want to see the Games being awarded to any of them except for Turkey which still remains the most advanced Muslim country when it comes to gay rights. While I will be happy for Istanbul to host the 2020 Olympics I, like many others here do fear for the future of that country. Remember that the Nazis weren’t in power when the IOC award Berlin the 1936 Games.
Madrid will be a good host for the Games but Paris will be submitting a bid for 2024, the centenary of the 1924 ‘Chariots Of Fire’ Olympics and if the Games are to come to Western Europe then then it will only be fair to give a country in another region the right to host.

    1. Ginger, I am going to throw a thought out there… people can attack me if they wish, it is a thought and feedback may fuel insight.

Your comment that no Muslim country has ever hosted the games, this is food for thought! have they even entered the bidding process? (maybe I should do some Google searches) My logic is simple in deduction, if women are not of stature, or allowed revelation in dress/attire would women from around the world be able to compete in games in a Muslim country, wearing swim suits. or other revealing athletic attire? Maybe herein alone is the one reason we will never see a Muslim country regardless of wealth bid for the games.

I perceive that culture in some countries is the reason we would never see them bid or host the games.

      1. I don’t think that’s really an issue in Turkey. They may have their own issues like all countries, but it’s hardly Iran.

Generally women and LGBT people wouldn’t face any issues visiting there.

  5. The horrible blood-sport of bullfighting is practiced in Madrid. Why would any person of decent consciousness give it to Madrid? Granted it would be better than Russia, but a horrible choice that would effect the torture of so many animals, as the influx of people would be reason to increase bullfights and ticket sales to the rings. Bad choice.

  6. “& the country to host the 2020 games will be *drumroll*…………
