  1. What an utterly meaningless statement.

She paints her nails in different colours and then bleats to the WESTERN media about it.

How is this silly action by this idiot helping the situation for LGBT people inside Russia.

“Idiot”? That’s hardly appropriate for someone you’ve probably never met or even heard of before now. What have you done to help the situation?

If your so opposed to how others are protesting what’s stopping you from going and making your own stand, Your own way?

    3. What? You mean like the massive difference you’re making commenting on Pink News?

Sweden, Sweden- lovely Sweden. Beautiful Emma-a very OK way to protest ! Thank You-

Sweden is the most gay friendly country in the world. This creates awareness due the openness in Swedish media !

  3. When an athlete does something clearly and out loud, then I’ll have respect for them.

Painting nails (that no one will notice unless it’s pointed out and the meaning explained) is a pretty pointless gesture.

All we’re seeing is athletes making half-hearted attempts at appeasing their LGBT fans, while taking absolutely no risks themselves. That’s not a protest, it’s expressing an opinion, no more relevant than nodding and mumbling “I agree”.

As for Nick Symmonds, does anyone have any video of his statement? All I have found is a video where he suggested that he was going to celebrate “without braking any laws” and to read his blog, no mention of LGBT issues at all, no outright support, no real meaning to anyone who wasn’t already intimately aware of his opinion.

These are NOT protests, they’re self-serving safe PR stunts.

  4. How does this help gay Russia. They won’t see it. And the dictatorship there doesn’t care less about Sweden.

It is an empty gesture from someone who if she had any integrity would have boycotted that hellhole.

    1. Jock S. Trap 15 Aug 2013, 3:12pm

Yeah, not going would have showed ’em…. showed em what exactly? Nobody being there and doing nothing?

You’re argument seems to be they shouldn’t be their to show any kind of gesture, take part in any kind of sport so we can boycott to do nothing.

      Don’t get how that works.

  5. She is an idiot for making a self serving, empty PR gesture that will not be noticed inside Russia, and then runs to the Western press and pretends she has done something worthwhile.

She clearly does nor care about human rights as otherwise she would have done something meaningful that would be noticed inside Russia.

Any athlete that attends these games or Sochi need to be held to account unless they actively protest the fascism there.

Answer my question: What have you done?

    2. Jock S. Trap 15 Aug 2013, 3:15pm

Yet she is there and you are not?

I take it we can expect you to go and lead the rally for the protest you’re seeking? No? thought not!

  6. OK thats a good start , now persuade your fellow male competititors and collegues from other countries to do the same – then it will get noticed.

  7. Thank you to a good strong WOMIN

  8. As that nice Mr. Tesco says, “Every Little Helps …”
Now how about something really BIG to really test the nerve of the Russian dictatorship …?

  9. Enom (Dexter fan!) 15 Aug 2013, 6:49pm

Uh oh.. it seems Dexter Morgan’s Brother is back with vengeance!

    1. I guess there are no gay Dexter fans then. :(

  10. THis is EXACTLY what is needed…non-stop gestures big and small building to a crescendo at the closing night of the 2014 Winter Olympics!

  11. She is showing support, that is all that matters. That is all we asked for. Beggars can’t be choosers! She took the time to think of a creative way of bypassing their silly laws, that is EXACTLY what everybody needs to be doing. That is EXACTLY what we need.

No it wasn’t an extravogent plot with fire-breathers and background music, but it is something. Something is better than nothing.

Yes, she could have been more “obvious” – but she is risking her career and being slammed in the freakin’ Gulag, cut her some slack! She didn’t have to do this after all. Too few people stick up for us, we cannot risk turning them against us for no good reason.

    Thank you Emma :)
