  1. How times have changed! The Daily Record supported the retention of Section 28/Clause 2a and backed Souter’s “referendum” at the time.

While I’m glad they now support equal marriage, I’d like an apology from the Daily Record, or at least an acknowledgement about their role in denying equality to gay people only a decade ago. I’m not going to hold my breath, though.

    1. I was going to say the same thing. The venom with which they attacked those looking to repeal Section 28 was horrible. They acted as the mouthpiece for Brian Soutar and his nasty campaign and I vowed then that I’d never buy that rag again. Good for them if the intervening decade has brought them a bit of enlightenment but the Record has a long way to go in order to make up for past misdeeds.

Frankly I’m gob-smacked, but obviously I welcome the change of stance from their previous viciously anti-gay posture.

It is not a publication I have ever read except very occasionally myself when something specially heinous in it was brought to my attention (any more than I read the Mirror, Mail or Sun) so am well aware of what it stood (and perhaps stands) for.

  3. The Record has really changed/modernised over the last decade with most, if not all, of its old homophobic writers replaced.

I can only re-iterate what the others have said already – this is a monumental change for The Daily Record. Words can’t really express just how particularly disgusting and nasty their support of the ‘keep the clause’ campaign was. They clearly saw LGBTs as an easy group to pick on and f£$k the consequences for LGBTs. Their writers and columnists were equally virulent in their hatred. I swore never to read the newspaper again after that. As a comparison for English readers – this turnaround would be on the same monumental scale as the Daily Mail suddenly embracing illegal immigrants, the EU, the Human Rights Act, the Welfare State, unmarried mothers with multiple children to different fathers claiming benefits and living free in 10 bedroom mansions in Notting Hill!

I will never forgive Daily Record when it supported the Section 28 camp and fought against the repeal [of Section 28]. They said a lot of very hurtful things about the LGBT community.

Only reason I can think of this sudden “change of heart” is that their yearly circulation have plummeted in the last 10 years (from 620,000 in 2000 to 291,000 in 2012) and they needed a new target audience (i.e. LGBT readers) to boost their newspaper sales.

Nice try Daily Record, I’m not falling for it.
