  1. The only way to bypass the law is to show solidarity through alternative means, I think people should dress in the blue & white sailor costumes complete with jaunty beret ! Can their own uniform be classed as “propaganda”? .

A rainbow flag or a same-sex couple kissing will turn your kid gay? Really? What a cop out !

    1. Some said Elton John’s jackets were promoting homosexuality, the law is deliberately vague to allow such interpretation.

      1. That is true, but if they class the uniforms as propaganda they would have to arrest their own paratroopers too. If it is not propaganda, an activist can simply say they are wearing a paratrooper uniform, and are not even “gay”, just a paratrooper.

  2. Wonder how long its going to take before the United Russia Party and its supporters start using this law openly against political opponents, those they have not got on something else yet, that is.

    1. jamestoronto 13 Aug 2013, 4:22am

Agreed! The Putinists have pretty well worn the tax evasion/corruption charges against political opponents quite thin. How convenient is it that all the tax evaders are in the opposition? This sounds like a well-crafted new “legal” method to haul even more anti-Putin Russians. Much the same way the Malaysian government accuses its opponents on try trumped-ip sodomy charges. This new fascist trend in Russia is becoming a very real threat. The United Russia Party won’t stop with the LGBT community. No surprise if new laws are concocted to deal with “non-traditional” religious practices that contravene the Russian Orthodox Church and start seeing Jews and Muslims and — yes — Protestant Christians being hauled in for their propaganda activities. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

  3. With this statement the Olympic authority’s need to respond.

I would like to see lots of symbolic protest from athletes and spectators alike.

I could see peter Tachel and maybe a few MP’s who may be happy to sport rainbow pins and hold hands with their BF.s. If enough from around Europe, the US, Canada, New Zealand, etc, did that, then I think the Russian government would have a PR disaster of biblical proportions on their hands.

If they arrested enough supporters and high profile athletes etc, then the whole Olympics would become a farce and a national embarrassment.

    So, they aren’t commies anymore.
    Now they are just facists.

  5. So if every athlete wore a rainbow pin the Russian fascists would have no qualms about arresting and imprisoning them all. Well that would make for rather an interesting Olympics. They really need to relocate it right now.

    1. Absolutely, relocate the games.

Have the spokesmen for some of the big multinational company’s who are funding the games been asked to comment or take action…
      Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Procter & Gamble ?
Should we consider a boycott of their products if they refuse to take action?

  6. St Sebastian, the humanitarian 13 Aug 2013, 4:06am

Given the pomp and prestige associated with the opening and closing ceremonies, I advocate boycotting these two ceremonies which will say as much, if not more than any other form of protest. It will get the entire world press commenting causing the Russians much embarrassment, and nobody gets hurt or arrested.

  7. “The IOC says it still supports gays and lesbians being allowed to compete, but won’t let them use the Olympics as a platform to highlight Russia’s anti-LGBT human rights abuses. ”

Translation – We fully support gay and lesbian people as long as they are invisible, said the Int.Olympic Committee spokesman.

    1. *stares at a carry-esque closet with wide eyed horror* no mama, don’t make me go back mama, they’re just breasts mama everyone’s got em!!!!

  8. So! I guess this is the proverbial warning shot across the bow (so to speak) to those wishing to attend.

How is the world going to respond?

Should the athletes all be consulted to see if there is enough support for LGBT unilaterally boycott the Olympics?

If the athletes decide they want to go and make a visible or symbolic protest, does this mean they support LGBT with the possibility of consequences.

It’s a tough one damned if you do. or don’t politically or sports wise.

At this point my thoughts are go! don’t risk arrest by making protest on the medal podium… just know when you get your medals the world is behind you as the crowd breaks out in an LGBT… LGBT….LGBT ..LGBT chant! The Russians can’t target athletes… but they would have to padlock the stadiums if they wanted to arrest protestors.

Putin would not be a happy man if he had to black out or censor audio every medal ceremony for the duration of the games!

(There wouldn’t be too many happy Russians either)

  9. “Calm down it’s only the gays we are oppressing …for now “

  10. German ministers say Russian anti-gay law shows that Russia is moving towards becoming a dictatorship.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/08/12/uk-russia-gays-germany-idUKBRE97B0JT20130812

  11. Take this threat seriously. The Russians can very easily trump up false charges followed by arrest and imprisonment and you don’t have a leg to stand on. If anyone feels that they can trust the Russians then go ahead and go to the Olympics. They can arrest you even if they think you look gay. I for one will not be going. People can disappear forever in Russia. Better be safe than sorry the Russian authorities are not nice people.

  12. I’ll go NUTS if i see the words ‘non traditional sexual orientation ‘ again . What does it even mean ? Surely it depends what your traditions are. Same sex relationships have been around for ever so must be’ traditional’.

Western athletes who support the Russian anti gay pogroms by attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi should be ostracised and vilified at every opportunity and they should have fair warning of this before they go. We have little time left in which to bring as much pressure as possible on western Olympic committees to boycott the Russian games and we must step up our game. Athletes who go there will be hoping to gain medals with which they will then approach commercial concerns in order to make as much money as possible from such wins. The gay community is an important economic block when these companies are marketing as we have the disposable income. If we make it clear that participants in these games will be shunned then I am betting things will change in our favour and more importantly in the disgraceful and inhuman anti gay laws in Russia. Buyer and supporter of these laws beware; supporting and taking part in these games is giving tacit support to these dreadful laws….

….which are akin to Hitlers pogroms against the Jews, THE FREE WORLD IS WATCHING!

  14. Because they are harming gay children, remove all diplomatic immunity from all Russian officials and their families.

  15. Jock S. Trap 13 Aug 2013, 9:28am

Disgraceful considering just being Gay is all they need to arrest on promoting.

It’s nothing to do with promoting but all to do with turning a blind eye while they commit violence against both adults and children.

They are using the Olympics as a political weapon, I don’t care what people say in Russia it’s a tool to show hatred and to push to see how far they can go with it.

It’s a case of history starting to repeat itself and on the eve year of the centenary of the First World War.

Russia’s leader and followers should be ashamed of itself and I do worry what level it has to get noticed before action is taken.

  16. This link is relative to the anti LGBT laws in Russia, but not specifically this announcement.

It was an article/video highlighting exiting Russians already seeking refugee status becoming a reality.

    http://ca.news.yahoo.com/video/gay-russians-seeking-refuge-131300654.html

  17. GOOD. I’m glad they’ve said this.

Now Russia has stopped the charade of trying to look reasonable, maybe the IOC will do the decent thing?

  18. Sister Mary Clarence 13 Aug 2013, 9:35am

I’m sorry luvvie, you’d have to Alan Turing to work out what the fvck you’re on about.

Can you clarify, or as I suspect, isn’t it worth repeating?

    1. Sister, your posting make less sense unfortunately now Keith’s comment you were referring to has been deleted.

  19. Pink News ban the troll please, enough of the homo hating crazed “keith”.

    1. You can’t help but talk about peadophilia, incest, sc@t and beastiality every time you post (which is every day); who is meant to be the perverted freak here exactly?

  20. So …. David Cameron rejected Stephen Fry’s plea to move the Winter Games elsewhere. Having heard this declaration from Russia, is our Prime Minister happy to send our citizens into a situation which could result in imprisonment? The ONLY solution is sanctions against this failing and desperate regime and to MOVE THE GAMES!!!

  21. acts that are legal in Russia such as d`e-fa`c`to p`o`ly-=g`a`my

Poor old Perpetual Loser (aka Keith), not only having difficulty with his keyboard – again – but still unable to distinguish between de facto and legal. Bless.

Putin has us by the bollocks! If some participants display any symbol of solidarity with our Russian brothers and sisters and are arrested or mistreated, the IOC and western governments won’t lift a finger. The Mail and Telegraph along with all the bigots will say..’serve them right’ for violating Russia’s laws. What is the ECHR doing about this? Not a word from anyone.

  24. Oh dear, I can see an alarming debacle coming. Either the Olympic comittee are going to have shown their true colours, or the politicians will have shown their true colours or the Russian’s are going to be seen to be banning LGBT people form entry either way the fiasco that is the policy on this will be revealed i suspect.

  26. ‘gay rights activists will face arrest during Winter Olympic games’ ..and what about the homophobic gangs that are taunting, abusing, assulting and kiliing LGBT people in Russia. Where is the evidence that Russia is clamping down on these people and groups? I have seen no news on such arrests. Think that says it all!
