  1. “King of the Luvvies and High Priest of Hampstead” – this says everything about Mr. O’Neill. Shame on him.

  2. Robert in S. Kensington 7 Aug 2013, 4:51pm

OH f_ck of O’Neill and take your fake moral outrage about the Holocaust with you. Typical bloody hysterics from the Telegraph and not surprising Now if only there were some real dirt on him, probably is but we shall see.

    1. Colin (London) 7 Aug 2013, 9:13pm

      Thanks Robert..well said.

    2. Talking of hysterics…making an analogy between mass murder and genocide of millions of people and stupid laws that fine people for so-called propaganda is both hysterical and in very bad taste.

      1. I believe he’s refering to the political tactics used by dictators in the past and the patterns they take, the heirarchy of genocide, the gradual errosion of rights, the silencing of the opposition, the systematic oppression and slander and the similarities between the 2 Olympic events of 2014 and 1936 and the tactics used by each dictator to re-assure the international community that everything was just fine. It’s not about the holocaust, it’s about understanding /how/ the holocaust happened, the steps that were taken to allow it to happen, the patterns are strikingly similar if you know where to look.

        1. Thank you.
I don´t get why some did not get what Fry was explaining in his letter. Fry was very clear about the comparison. It amazes me that some just don´t get it.

          1. It’s not that they don’t get it, it’s that they don’t want to get it. It serves their (hidden) agenda.

          2. I agree with the “hidden agenda” thing. Most homophobes nowheredays know their views aren’t shared and so they dress up their language and twist their views to say “I’m not homophobic BUT ________________”

The homophobia shines through, it’s so transparent

            Mr. Pink

    3. Brendan O’Neill has demonstrated, yet again, that he is a fatuous homophobe.

  3. The point that this fool has missed is that Hitler didn’t START by putting the Jewish populace in ghettos or rounding them up and executing them – That was the consequence of a number of years of carefully cultivated state-generated animus.

That is what Stephen Fry was invoking, the situation in the 1930s where the Jewish population was being targeted for blame and vilification – which was the nascent condition for eventual acts of genocide. And that, with the knowledge of that history, how about we don’t bloody repeat it with the next disempowered scapegoat minority.

    1. Yes, my reaction to his comment was “He isn’t rounding them up and putting them into ghettos YET.”

  4. Don’t the Christians exploit the Holly Book to preach hatred? Hate is not a Christian virtue. Love is. Also the love between people of same gender.

    1. Sebastian Pinder 8 Aug 2013, 7:19am

      Some Christians not all.

      1. Actually, hate is a very much part of the Christian foundation, even if it is seeming passive or by default. They extoled a delusion of a perfect afterlife and abhor earthly life reality.

        1. This problem occurs because religion (wether it be islam, christianity, whatever brand you like) does not value its fellow humans or life in general. They see humans as ultimatley disposable worms, and life is nothing but a mere practice trial for the real deal. They value ‘god’ over their fellow man, which allows them to do horrific things to their fellow man in the name of ‘god.

  5. What an absolute arse. Time for a campaign to get the homophobic telegraph to change or get rid of this idiot.

I hope non of you buy this paper!

    1. Beelzeebub 7 Aug 2013, 5:13pm

I wouldn’t wipe my @rse with it for rear of catching “bigot”.

      1. Same with the Telegraph newspaper. You would not wipe your arse with it if you were caught short and had no toilet paper to hand.

      2. Commander Thor 7 Aug 2013, 8:58pm

Well you could get Keith to help I guess… He would love it!

      3. Made the mistake of clicking the link and reading the Telegraph comments page.

In between ad-hominem attacks on Stephen Fry and suggesting he boycott Quatar if he’s “so serious” about gay rights, 2/3rds of the comments can barely conceal their joy at the prospect of some kind of gay roundup and pogrom.

I remembered why I don’t read the Telegraph comments page, but not before loosing a portion of my faith in humanity.

Worst thing is my folks read this toxic rag.

    2. Violets 49 7 Aug 2013, 11:34pm

A few weeks ago my Local W. H. Smith’s was giving one away if you bought a magazine. Strangely enough nobody seemed to want one. Ditto with the Daily Mail a few weeks before.

    3. Why would I ever want the Torygraph! It is unworthy of wrapping my fish and chips!

  6. As valsky said, Hitler didn’t ’round up’ Jews (and the gay community) and send them to concentration camps at first. The holocaust was completed in stages over a number of years, and one of those stages (the propaganda) at the start was similar to what putin and Co are doing at the moment. Who is to say what putin and the Russian MP’s will do their LGBT citizens next if they are not stopped. If only people had written to the prime minister before the second world war, if only more countries had boycotted the olympic games in 1936 before hitler got to those extremes, perhaps history would tell a different story.

This two bit, never heard of him, telegraph columnist is exploiting the suffering of LGBT people (both in the holocaust and in russia at the moment) to further his own homophobia. Disgusting man. His evil is transparent, as is the russian authorities. He should be ashamed of himself.

  7. Stephen in Canterbury 7 Aug 2013, 5:34pm

It strikes me that Mr O’Neill is the one who is historically illiterate, since the turning of a blind eye to thuggery and beatings of the scapegoated minority on street corners and exhortations for people to report suspected felons to the authorities (as Putin’s law requires) was EXACTLY the way that the holocaust started. No we have not got to the stage of the death camps yet Mr O’Neill, but would you rather we waited. And incidentally, are you not aware that tens of thousands of homosexuals were treated I exactly the same way by the Nazis Mr O’Neill? The holocaust was not only wrought on the Jews, but on LGBT people, liberals, communists, activists, people with mental health conditions and the disabled …. most of whom Mr Fry is perfectly able to speak for…. Who do you speak for Mr O’Neill and what is your experience of shame, humiliation, beatings and bullying? If you don’t have any, then shut up please and stop knocking those who are sick of such treatment!

    1. Damien in Zaandam 7 Aug 2013, 8:25pm

Very well put, Stephen in Canterbury, spot on. Thank you.

    2. Bravo!

  8. Carl Bavin 7 Aug 2013, 5:46pm

This ill-educated individual needs to check the facts before spouting off right winged tosh. Gay people shared exactly the same fate as the Jews during the holocaust.

  9. Mr lightweight, underexperienced O’Neil – go away and come back when you’re a big boy and have something to offer.

  10. Godric godricson 7 Aug 2013, 5:49pm

Who the hell voted for Brendan O’Neill?

  11. Andrew Quinn 7 Aug 2013, 5:50pm

Hitler started somewhere and didnt begin with putting the jewish people of Europe into ghettos he used insidious methods of propganda at first to stir up hatred of the jews thats what Stephen Fry is getting at the beginning of something evil.

  12. Just another of the competitively obnoxious little bystanders who say “Look at me aren’t I clever etc”. There are a number of them on the right and left of journalism – I had never heard of this particular gerbil until this. But they all do the same: attack someone popular who’s trying to make an honest point, deride and insult them and then make a few glib and inaccurate generalisations about some history or other.

Students of Godwin’s Law (which Fry was in danger of invoking with his letter) will know that the law makes allowance for the rare comparisons to the Nazis that are actually appropriate!

O’Neill is, I am sure, enjoying all the attention – but he will now have to put “Putin Apologist” on his CV – next to homophobe perhaps?

  13. gulliveruk 7 Aug 2013, 6:04pm

I do online rants too, but I don’t go around calling myself a journalist – what a cheek! He’s, um, … a very homophobic ill-informed far right ranter.

    1. Gulliver- He’s got a bee in his bonnett when it comes to gays and gay rights-remember the contribution he made to the equal marriage debate?

He’s just the Telegraph’s ‘homophobe in residence’

      To be ignored I think

  14. Brendan, get your historical facts right before you start blowing off your homophobia and inaccurate rhetoric. Putin has started a war against the gays. Troopers are beating up gays in the street in Moscow while the police stand by and do nothing. This is just the start. Then it WILL be camps for gays, and possibly torture. THEN it may even be camps for extermination. (And remember the hitler camps were full of jews, gays and non-conformists as well). So do yourself a favour and learn history.

  15. Oh look more homophobia from the Torygraph. What a surprise

  16. Look him up. Formerly of Revolutionary Communist Party, wrote for Living Marxism which was apologist for Serbian nationalist concentration camps. I remember arguing this with members of the party just after Balkan wars. Odious.

A bit of a climate change denier.

Wrote much about same sex marriage and how it wasn’t a true activist led social movement.

If we waited for the rump proletariat to rise up and take control and give us our rights we’d be waiting a long time.

    1. That There Other David 7 Aug 2013, 7:15pm

As I’ve posted above (although I’m not currently sure if the post will actually display) Brendan O’Neill has been a little too close to Russian and Slav organisations during his career to be considered anything other than an ardent apologist for Moscow IMO. It wouldn’t surprise me if he supplements his income from the Telegraph via other payments that’s for sure.

  17. With all the current news, all the most recent photo’s and what we’ve all scene on the news and social media sights has been astonishing. When all this crap started to happen in Russia, it scared the chit out of me. Putin is Hitler, reincarnated (sp). It’s highly visable. Actions speak louder that words. Images just proves it. If the IOC does not simply cancel the games based on Russia’s new laws, then it’s up to our GLBT athlete’s to make that decision. Its a risk. WE as a collective all know, to stay home is the best choice. There will be another Winter Olympics. I’m just a Canadian that would like to see his GLBT athletes compete again! I guess I’m a tad realistic but when certain facts pertaining to Putin and LGBT Russia, are friggin’ scary.

  18. > “He (Fry) says Putin is ‘eerily repeating [Hitler’s] insane crimes’. This is deeply offensive – to Jews.”

Given that Stephen Fry is Jewish, I think that he is better placed than Brendan O’Neill to decide what is offensive to Jews.

    1. Not to mention he is repeating Hitler’s insane crimes against GAYS which Stephen Fry also happens to be.

  19. The telegraph? Well in that case, we need inquire no further! Second only in bigotry to the Daily Mail.

  20. “I think same-sex marriage is an entirely invented…….”
Not only same sex marriage, but marriage in general is an invention of our species. No other species has a system of marriage and divorce (license, ceremony, legal aspects, etc.) with all that goes with it.

  21. Scott Rose 7 Aug 2013, 7:21pm

If that fool would open his eyes, he would see that there are many Jews calling for the Olympics to be boycotted. I dare say that Hollywood and Broadway star Harvey Fierstein better understands these issues than does this fool.

  22. Brendan O’Neill also writes for The Big Issue, I believe.

  23. Philip Cleary 7 Aug 2013, 7:39pm

Brendan O’Neill, you really are being a complete tit, learn a bit of history first before you start making comparisons, FFS!

  24. “Putin is not rounding up gays, putting them in disgusting ghettos, and plotting to execute every last one of them, as Hitler did with the Jews.”…yet.

    1. The opposition has already been totally silenced, the people are being snatched from the street; dragged into black vans, with a bag on their head. State sanctioned murder, torture and beating, ditched in the street and left for dead. Over 400 “anti-peadophilia” groups, using entrapment and deciet through the internet to blackmail, beat, torture, or kill children. Most of the time they just take to the street to seek out their target, and they know nobody will hear their screams.

Putin doesn’t need to build camps to carry out a genocide
He can trick his people into carrying it out for him
He can just tell everyone to behave when the visitors are round for tea, and when we’re gone, it’s business as usual in Mother Russia.

      1. I shudder just thinking about it.

  25. Rugby Neil 7 Aug 2013, 8:22pm

Maybe O’Neill is looking for a personal journalistic leg-up by jumping on a story which clearly has momentum, even though he clearly hasn’t got a bloody clue! However, I personally fully support Stephen Fry using his celebrity to speak on my behalf wholeheartedly!!!

  26. Scott Larsen 7 Aug 2013, 8:26pm

Is journalist (sic) Brendan O’Neill of the ‘Troygraph’ (I borrowed this great nickname from Sparky…) the sign of a neo Clivenden Set (pro-Nazi sympathizers in the 1930’s) for the 21st century? But now the front man apologist for the Russians and Putin?

  27. Considering that Mr Fry is of Jewish descent and actually lost family in the death camps i find it doubtful that he would use the analogy lightly. And when it come to who i would trust intellectually Mr Fry, or Mr O’Neil, I’m sorry but i would choose Mr Fry every time over that hack O’Neil.

    1. Colin (london) 7 Aug 2013, 9:16pm

      Beautifully put…thanks

  28. Wow – Does O’Neill not realize that HOMOSEXUALS were rounded up by the nazis and put into concentration camps. He seems to think that only jews were killed by the Nazi’s.

O’Neill really need to learn some history. His statements make it clear that he has no understanding of the persecution of gays and lesbians during World War II. Does he even know that’s where the Pink Triangle came from?

    O’Neill is clearly an idiot.

  29. Matthew Brooks-Phillips 7 Aug 2013, 9:07pm

This guy is an absolute idiot, I would say it to his face if I met hit and normally I am not confrontational !

  30. Richard Finnigan 7 Aug 2013, 9:24pm

That vile but skilfull hack that got his history wrong and journos like that do that deliberately for effect, he knows full well that in 1936 the Nazis were persecuting the Jews but they weren’t murdering them on mass and he has dishonestly extrapolated the point that Putin is not planning to murder thousands of gays but Steven Fry is not saying that is he? That’s something that has been constructed by the journalist.

  31. Craig Nelson 7 Aug 2013, 10:04pm

I think there are a number of really serious issues here that are potentially lost in the crossfire. Firstly the thing about the Nazis is that they are a “Warning from History”. We don’t have to wait until things get that bad until we get alarmed and start to get concerned about what is happening.

Already one group of people who live under the European Convention of Human Rights have lost freedom of peaceful assembly and expression. That is already alarming in and of itself.

The second broader issue is about sporting venues and holding them in places that are not safe for all fans, staff and participants.

Both issues are important and neither is going to go away. By the way some people refer to the Russian antigay law as being a bit like section 28. As bad as s28 was this is much, much worse. Section 28 only covered Local Authorities and had no criminal penalties. This law covers everyone and has very steep criminal penalties.

  32. Christopher Coleman 7 Aug 2013, 10:11pm

I supposed that Stephen Fry, by invoking Hitler and the 1936 Olympics, was comparing the German anti-Semitism and the current Russian homophobia; neither more nor less. O’Neill read that simple comparison as something else. Can we expect unbiased accuracy in any of Mr. O’Neill’s writings?

  33. The comparison of Putin to Hitler is very apt…..Don’t worry nobody is trying to diminish the holocaust for the jews….They can continue living their lives as victims

    1. That There Other David 7 Aug 2013, 11:20pm

      WTF??!?! Are you for real?

      1. “Repeat over and over again that 6 million Jews died at the holocaust, and the Jews will enjoy endless sympathy. However, keep quiet about the 26 million Russians who were killed by the Nazi’s, and Russian suffering becomes invisible”

  34. Beelzeebub 7 Aug 2013, 10:33pm

I posted a link in the Daily Hate about the open murder of young gay people in Russia.

    It was voted down.

And how they laughed at how it was deserved.

Th UK is full of very sick evil people. All of them described themselves as Christians.

    1. I clicked on that Telegraph link, believe me when I say it wasn’t much better.
A chilling insight into how a portion of the UK population appear to think that nice Mr Hitler had the right basic principles but the wrong PR men.

    2. One day they will be awakened to the horrors they have embraced

They will learn, and realise how long they’ve been throughout their entire lives

The suffering and deaths of millions will be on their shoulders, and they will have to live with themselves

In the same way the average german person watched their jewish neighbours get carted off in a van but didn’t think until after the learned of what happened to them, and how they allowed it to happen to them, and how they wanted it to happen to them.

They will beg for forgiveness, and I will forgive them.

  35. Dennis Cambly 7 Aug 2013, 10:43pm

Obviously Brendan O’Neill does not know the history of the “Pink Triangle”. Hitler branded gays with that symbol so they too were marked for the concentration camps. The state sanctioned beatings and humiliation is what Stephen Fry is saying. Now Putin is doing the very same thing with his draconian laws targeted at a minority group. We have come a long way in Canada towards equality. The “little dictator” Putin is finally showing his true colours as a bigotted liar.

  36. Matthew Nolan 7 Aug 2013, 11:48pm

Mr O’Neil is it seems a man in a position where his opinion is expressed and the rest of the world can read it. Seems somewhat similar to his accusations about Steven Fry. Mr O’Neil does not is appears feel any emotional attachment to the subject as you would expect a cold hard journalist not too. Thanks for sharing your opinion hopefully it doesn’t happen very often.

  37. Brendan O’Neill is fat, one-note rent-a-gob whose punditry is driven almost entirely by a perverse, unhealthy obsession with gay men (seriously, 9 of 10 of his posts are gay-bashing pieces) when he is not thinking of ever more inventive ways of defending child rapists in the clergy.

  38. GulliverUK 8 Aug 2013, 12:27am

When I read the comments on the Telegraph around 6pm he was getting the crap kicked out of him. Probably changed by now, but lovely to see the hounds of hell hadn’t logged in and it gave a chance for the often-silenced majority of intelligent posters to have their say.

    1. I read them at around 3pm and the O’neill supporters had already chimed in with their barely concealed relish at the prospect of a gay pogrom.

Glad to hear someone posted a counter argument.

  39. I’m sorry but gays were also rounded up and sent off to concentration camps, and were often beat up not just by the guards but also other prisoners of the concentration camps. Gays were treated just as bad as the Jews As usual another over the top right winger has no idea about this because they have no heart for the gay community.

  40. Shelley Adrienne Mimi Belsky 8 Aug 2013, 12:56am

    Dear Mr. O’Neil,

The only thing history needs to repeat itself is the silence of those with power who fail to speak up.
You sir are an enabler of the oppression in Russia.
I defend your tright to speak, and exercise mine to call you an idiot.

    1. An irishman tells a jewish gentleman what to think about the Holocaust. A Jewish gentleman with direct family members who died in said Holocaust.

      It’s not on.

Also, as other commentators have said, gays were also rounded up.

Assume this fellow has his own agenda. This is now what happens. The agenda hides under cross-party issues posing as ‘reasonable’.

I’m not especially left wing. But this right wing dissemblance, Gay issues are now the way the right wing discusses a generic agenda.

  41. Just another Roman Catholic bigot. If he had the power O’Neill would institute Putin’s disgusting laws in the UK. He obviously doesn’t bother reading the news about the violence these laws have caused. Also doesn’t have much of a historical memory. Stephen Fry does.

    1. Stephen Fry like O’Neill is an atheist (not a catholic – as your Rome-o-phobic rant said above) , however it was Fry who had to say sorry to the Polish people for blaming the holocaust on them – yeah he’s a holocaust revisionist !.Now he’s comparing the banning of homosexual porn aimed at those under 18 to the holocaust .This is the same Fry who’s books The Liar and The Hippopotamus, glorify sex between men and teenage boys.

  42. I don’t think Mr. O’Neill realizes that the Holocaust didn’t just appear out of nowhere. It’s not as though one day they started rounding up Jews and bringing them to death camps. Things start out small, with “minor”-seeming laws of intolerance or persecution. And then when they are given permission from the outside world, they attain the gall to move forward to the next steps. And then the next steps. And the next… And a few years down the road, if we don’t say NO now, history CAN repeat itself.

  43. El Gabal, and so many others, are quite correct about O’Neill. A former member of the disgraced cult the Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP), which plotted to overthrow democracy, O’Neill has since become ever more twisted and bitter. He hates virtually everything and everyone, attacking environmentalists, anti-Tescos campaigns, liberal parents, David Beckham (yup! he devoted an entire column on that one), vegetarians, and everything he deems representative of modern life. But it is gay people that his warped little mind detests more than anything else. As El Gabal pointed out (above), he devotes more of his poisonous pen time attacking us than any other group. That he should end up writing for the Telegraph, the newspaper that in 1988 asked, in apparent seriousness, “Is there a Homosexual Conspiracy?” is of course, quite fitting.

  44. Sebastian Pinder 8 Aug 2013, 7:17am

Stephen Fry has the right to voice his opinion like every one else. But I agree with Brendan O’Neill that it was poor judgment to compare the events in Russia with the holocaust. What Brendan O’Neill forgets to mention, many gay men and woman also died in the camps.

    1. If you read Fry carefully, he is comparing current events in Russia with those events in Nazi Germany in the 1930s that lead up to the Holocaust…Fry is obviously not suggesting there’s a ‘gay holocaust’ going on in Russia right now (though for some poor unfortunates and their families, there may as well be..)…In this he is absolutely accurate…..

  45. I have to say that the only argument I’m persuaded of in favour of fracking is that it might tear up large swathes of property owned by Telegraph readers & its ‘journalists’ (I use the word loosely)…….vermin, down to the last bigot….

  46. Coemgenus 8 Aug 2013, 9:43am

Telegraph? Is that thing still in print?

  47. fu.k off o’neill you turd. the better part of you ran down your fathers leg

  48. Whattapr!ck 8 Aug 2013, 1:03pm

As Valksy said this O’Neill seems to be the uneducated one as Hitler didn’t start forced removals to ghettos untill after the Olympics really… It is a bit much to claim mr Fry to be uneducated really… Or even pompous… Sounds a wee envious really… At least Fry knows what he is talking about

  49. I wonder if Neill has ever taken fellow columnist Richard Littlejohn to task over his countless uses of Holocaust imagery (‘Nazi’, ‘gestapo’ etc) while ripping into various targets, all considerably less serious than cases of genuine persecution.

  50. No Mr. O’Neil. Putin is not putting gaus in ghetos, but he is allowing other idiots and bigoted nazzi bastrds to beat gaysup and murder them. There is a comparisson to Hitler and Putin…they are both evil and Putin will hopefully die with a shot in the middle of his forhead and I can wait for this to happen soon.

  51. Remember to share your thoughts directly with said journalist.

    His website:
    His email:

  52. Obviously O’neill would be well suited under Putins regime as he is clearly homophobic, There are huge similarities as to how the holocaust started with hitler, maybe O’neill should refresh his head with Milgrams theory of Obedience, thank god someone is doing something about it now before it escalates to concentration camps and mass murder.

  53. Also just for Mr O’neills information, homosexuals where treated as the lowest in society – among common criminals in Germany during the war, they where the only group not liberated at the end of the war, and where kept imprisoned because of their sexuality

  54. Well Brendon….you might as well go the whole hog & simply state you hate fags U Wanker.

  55. sensorsweep 8 Aug 2013, 8:44pm

fry’s mom’s family is jewish and he lost family members in the holocaust.
    and he’s gay.

so fry “exploiting” the holocaust is a little different than the average person bringing up hitler when complaining about obama or taxes or gun laws or the new facebook layout.

  56. Hitler didn’t start out with death camps. He started out by passing laws that restricted freedoms of a minority- just like Putin is doing. No-one is saying they are the same thing, but there are definate similarities. Vigilantes are murdering gay kids and the government turns a blind eye because it approves of it. This is similar to how Nazi Germany began.

  57. I emailed O’Neill to tell him why I think his article is ignorant and misinformed. You can too!

  58. “First they came for the communists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

    Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.”

    – Martin Niemöller
