I’ve written to the Scottish Conservatives who seem aware of the likely divisive nature of this debate and are allowing a free vote to MSP’s. The SNP are OK with the legislation although may need a prompt and ‘encouragement’ through letters and emails. So, far I haven’t heard from the Scottish Labour party. Still, nice to hear that Johann Lamont has taken a lead with the video.

    1. All parties in the Scottish Parliament are giving their MSPs a free vote. I e-mailed all parties months ago asking them and Labour, Lib Dems, and Greens answered to say they were doing so. The SNP and Conservatives ignored me, but they’ve both announced since then that they’re giving their MSPs a free vote.

So according to the Equal Marriage Pledge that’s Yes – 89, No – 11 and 29 undeclared so far.

Although I did read a still undeclared Labour MSP say on Twitter a couple of months ago that he’ll vote for it.

To break it down by party (if I’ve added up correctly!):

      SNP – 65 MSPs: Yes – 50, No – 2, Undeclared – 13
      Labour – 37 MSPs: Yes – 27, No – 1, Undeclared – 9
      Conservatives – 15 MSPs: Yes – 2, No – 7, Undeclared – 6
      Lib Dems – 5 MSPs: Yes – 5
      Greens – 2 MSPs: Yes – 2
      4 Independents: Yes – 3, No – 1

So there is enough support as long as those who’ve pledged to vote Yes actually do so. I’ve a feeling one or two might not bother to turn up, like in Westminster.

Hi Bennie, Who was the Labour MSP on twitter by the way?

        1. Mark Griffin. He was repying to a tweet from LGBT Labour a couple of months ago. They had asked him and other Labour MSPs if they’d vote for it.

          1. On 10 March 2013.

          3. No bother! Glad to have been even the tiniest wee bit of help to your fantastic campaign!

As a Scot living in London for some 17 years I am so heartened to hear this and think it will happen in Scotland. I left Scotland when it was clear that as a gay man my career was dead in the water and it hurt.

I have a gay niece in Scotland today at university and am delighted that she will never feel the rejection I did as Scotland embraces Equality and Inclusiveness.

So proud of you Scotland embrace this change and talented people will stay in your country and not look elsewhere.

Thank you to Johann Lamont and all the others who have voiced their support as part of the Equality Network It’s Time video campaign.

  4. I think they should change the name from “it’s time” to “well it’s about freakin’ time, what took you so long!”
