Comic creator Stan Lee dismisses idea of a bisexual Spider-Man

Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee has poured cold water on suggestions that the superhero should be bisexual in a future movie.

The 90-year-old joked that “one sex is enough for anyone” at the Fandomfest event in Louisville, Kentucky, at the weekend.

Actor Andrew Garfield, who plays the comic book hero in the forthcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 recently pondered exploring the character’s sexuality, revealing in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he wanted to push the boundaries:

“I was like, ‘What if MJ [Spidey’s love interest] is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?” the actor said.

But speaking last week at the San Diego Comic-Con, Garfield revisited his ideas by telling fans that Spider-Man would not be turning bisexual or gay any time soon.

He said: “It would be illogical for me in the third movie to be kind of like, ‘You know what, I’m kind of attracted to guys’ That’s just not going to work. It’s clear.”

On his original remarks, he said: “It was just a simple philosophical question about sexual orientation, prejudice.”

In response, Stan Lee, who created the comic book series, dismissed the idea of a bisexual Spider-Man, saying: “He’s becoming bisexual? Really? Who have you been talking to?”

“I don’t know… seriously, I don’t know anything about that. And if it’s true, I’m going to make a couple of phone calls. I figure one sex is enough for anybody,” he joked.
