John Barrowman was bombarded with homophobic messages after he shared the news of his surprise wedding with Scott Gill earlier this month.

The Glasgow-born Torchwood star married his long term partner Scott Gill in the US earlier this month after the Supreme Court overturned the controversial Defense of Marriage Act.

Barrowman received a flood of congratulatory messages from fans all over the world, but he has also revealed that he was the target of homophobic abuse.

He says, “I don’t get it. Some of the comments were outrageously vile. Quoting lines from the Bible. I won’t tolerate it. People like that are banned on my Twitter account. I tell them to fuck off.”

He added: “People have a right to their beliefs but it doesn’t mean they have to be nasty and deny other people their human rights.

“The world is not going to change and fall apart because a gay couple got married. It’s a way for us to celebrate our love. That’s it.”

Previously, Barrowman criticised the church over equal marriage attacks. He said: “That’s not being Christian at all. In fact, I think it’s evil. Being gay is not, as they claim, against the laws of nature. I was born this way. And there’s a reason I was born this way. I didn’t decide to wake up gay one morning.

“If two people love each other enough and want to call what they have a ‘marriage’, regardless of their sex, shouldn’t we let them do that? Otherwise, we’re in the Dark Ages again.”
