British actor Andrew Garfield has revisited his stance on introducing a gay Peter Parker in the forthcoming Amazing Spider-Man sequel, and said “it’s just not going to work.”

Earlier this month, Garfield issued the idea of a gay Spider-Man in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly. He said: “Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking!”

However, this week at the San Diego Comic-Con, Garfield revisited his ideas by telling fans that Spider-Man will not be turning gay any time soon.

He said: “It would be illogical for me in the third movie to be kind of like, ‘You know what, I’m kind of attracted to guys’ That’s just not going to work. It’s clear.”

On his original remarks, he said: “It was just a simple philosophical question about sexual orientation, prejudice.

“I obviously long for the time where sexual orientation and skin color is a small thread in the fabric of a human being.”

Garfield had originally suggested that Michael B. Jordan could potentially play Spider-Man’s gay love interest. He said: “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better-we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

However, at Comic-Con he said: “To speak to the idea of me and Michael B. Jordan gay together, it’s not…it was tongue and cheek.”

Andrew Garfield was previously outspoken in his support for equal marriage, when in an interview with The Times in April he challenged: “How can anyone argue against compassion and understanding?”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due to be released on May 2, 2014 in UK theaters.
