British actor Andrew Garfield has revealed that he would want a gay or a bisexual Peter Parker in the forthcoming sequel of the Spider-Man franchise.

Garfield reprises his role as the superhero in the upcoming ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ next year, and recently revealed he has signed on for two more films in the series.

Starring as the hero’s love interest ‘Gwen Stacey’ is Emma Stone, Garfield’s real life girlfriend, but the British Actor has come out in strong support for a re-imagined love interest for the series, saying he wants a male character named AJ instead.

The actor explained to Entertainment Weekly that he had long talks with the films’ producer Matt Tolmach about the idea: “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?'”

He added: “Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

When asked by Entertainment Weekly which actor he thinks could play AJ, Garfield said: “I’ve been obsessed with Michael B Jordan since ‘The Wire’. He’s so charismatic and talented. It’d be even better – we’d have interracial bisexuality!”

Andrew Garfield was previously outspoken in his support for equal marriage, when in an interview with The Times in April he challenged: “How can anyone argue against compassion and understanding?”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due to be released on May 2, 2014 in UK theaters.
