  1. So what he wants is a “Land of the free” unless you do something I don’t like and then you should be sent to a military base for re-education!

    1. Midnighter 3 Jul 2013, 12:22am

Ha! Yep as with most bigots, freedom and liberty is only applicable to the bigot and if you threaten to burst their little bubble they have a tantrum.

    2. And of course, let’s COMPLETELY ignore the fact of the GLBT troops who were brave in there willingness to hide a major part of themselves for so long, so that they could serve our country and help protect ALL US citizens.
      What a pompous, overbearing twit!

    3. St Sebastian 3 Jul 2013, 10:42am

Seems Allen West has an Orwellian ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘1984’ view of what is free:- ‘all animals are equal but some are more equal than others’, and ‘mind control’ to change or subjugate anyone who doesn’t fit his ideal.

The other thing I find extraordinary about certain military types like Allen West (but I stress, not all in the military) is that they feel that due to their military service they have the right to hold the rest of society to ransom in order to enforce their societal ideal.

  2. GulliverUK 3 Jul 2013, 12:19am

Allen West is a total wacko – he’s absolutely crazy, I wouldn’t be surprised if he said he had absolute proof that the moon was made of Cheddar cheese.

“LGBTs don’t need to worry about discrimination because it doesn’t happen.”. Freak joins Fox news network, looses election, total prick. He makes Sarah Palin looks like Desmond Tutu. This is the ones of the most crazy Americans alive.

  3. Personally I think she shouldn’t have changed the words. At the same time, I think people just need to let it go. There are far worse issues than someone changing the words to the national anthem.

    1. Yeah: ever voting for Alan West!

  4. anything out of alan west’s mouth can be taken as noise – the man is one of the dumbest people to ever walk the planet!

  5. So it’s only because Allen West was in the ARMY is the only reason he has an issue with Lasy Gaga changing a few words to show support for the LGBT.

  6. Allen West is NOT a US Congressman. He lost his seat last year. Also, don’t forget he was discharged from the Army for torturing an Iraqi. He has no credibility and should not be the subject of any press reports.

    1. Common sense 3 Jul 2013, 1:08am

Too right. It is worth noting that he is also a consultant to Fox News and a standard bearer for the American Teaparty Movement.

  7. Land of the fee, home of the slave, more like. Incidentally, Key’s song ‘the Star-Spangled Banner’ is sung to the music of an old English drinking song. I always smile when I hear it! And who gives a s**t if he served in the Army? Does that make him ‘more’ of an American? This chap has a seriously over-inflated sense of self-worth.

  8. Allen West is NOT a member of Congress. He is war criminal who cried like a titty baby when he lost his seat in November.

  9. The anthem is set to the melody of what was originally The Anacreontic Song, an English drinking song about the Bacchanalia. And Francis Scott Key’s poem was never exactly holy, but a description of the chaos of war. If this congressman is complaining about the song being defiled, that ship has long since sailed.

  10. David Speakman 3 Jul 2013, 6:18am

Allen West is not in Congress. He was kicked out by voters last election – you just gave him free publicity.

  11. Funny I didn’t think Kandahar was IN America.

  12. GingerlyColors 3 Jul 2013, 7:06am

The Sex Pistols did a version of our national anthem back in 1977 so I cannot see why the Americans have to make a big fuss about their anthem being changed. Tomorrow they will be celebrating their victory over us in the American War of Independence but am I going to be taking offence over that?

  13. He concluded: “She and all those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired member of our Armed Services… But perhaps I ask too much…”
… Would that include the 10% or so LGBT soldiers we were ‘brave’ and fought for the nation? Or just the straight ones?

  14. Allen West is ignoring the LGBT people who serve in the US Army, people who until recently were treated shamefully by their own country.

    1. Indeed. West conveniently forgets those.

  15. Colin (London) 3 Jul 2013, 7:41am

Something in me thinks that most right thinking Americans will see this for what it was an emotional way to connect the gay community to the national anthem.

To me it was referencing equality. These changes are life changing for a small minority group and many have fought very hard to get their community to back them.

    Keep singing girl.

  16. We all know that the U.S isn’t as free as they would like us to believe.

Many states still allow the dismissal of employees based on sexual orientation. Many states still deny their LGBT their basic human rights.

When U.S LGBT citizens, along with other minority groups have full equality, then they claim to be land of the free.

    1. Beelzeebub 3 Jul 2013, 12:01pm

And there own government spies on them.

      Very free. NOT.

  17. Allen West should get a life.
It was a one-time deal at a Pride event, not some “secret gay agenda [TM]” to alter the national anthem forever and have a dig at the armed forces.
What did he make of it when Hendrix did his version at Woodstock and burned his guitar?
If he wants his version sung he can have it his way virtually anywhere else. Anyone with a brain can tell she was playing to that particular crowd.
He’s typical of reactionaries who come out with dumb statements like “I didn’t fight the Nazis back in WWII so minorities I don’t like could enjoy freedom of speech”.
If they wanted unquestioning conformity, they were fighting on the wrong side.

  18. West isx really a total arse.. He lost an election a couple years ago and refused to concede , which is generally a nice way to tell his oponent that he respects the will of the voters.

    More republican trash

    1. Actually I stand corrected – he lost the last election. SOB belongs in a joob cleaning sewers in the elephant house at the zoo

  19. It’s only been the national anthem since 1931, but people like West and the teabaggers seem to think it was handed down by Moses.

Because it’s hard to sing and sort of silly anyway, other songs are frequently suggested to replace it. My pick would be American the Beautiful, a very un-warlike song with a lovely tune.

    1. Mihangel apYrs 3 Jul 2013, 11:13am

“American the Beautiful” – a love song to your country. What better sort of anthem?

When I see/listen to “God save the Queen” I remember one verse is given to hating the Scots, and despair just a bit, but being Welsh I sing “Land of my Fathers” again a hymn of praise.

  20. PeterinSydney 3 Jul 2013, 9:16am

West is a well known gay hater and woman hater as well. No one who is civilised should be interested in anything he says.

  21. OK! let’s get serious! is Lady GAGA the only person to substitute lyrics for they Star Spangled Banner? No! and she won’t be the last!

As much as it is regarded as the “Holy Grail” by many, just as many others have taken liberties for special events, tributes to individuals.

This outburst was more about the mans homophobia than than national pride!

Perhaps he should do some homework… namely “Notable errors, changed or forgotten lyrics” @

At least lady GAGA reflected a recent reality of acceptance and freedom for a great many Americans.

  22. So she must be doing something right then.

  23. .....Paddyswurds 3 Jul 2013, 11:49am

She changed one word in what is a disgraceful tirade of death destruction and hatred. The USA has made its living out of the misery and deaths of millions around the world, the more stone age the better, and their anthem is nothing to have any great respect for. Like most national anthems it could do with a complete rewrite ……

  24. It’s always annoying how people, like West, who have less than sterling pasts, are the very ones who become the most disgustingly sanctimonious finger pointers. But then, losers like him are like the typical second rate comic, always playing to the cheap seats.

  25. Janet Lameck 3 Jul 2013, 10:04pm

He had to be a Republioan.

  26. Home of the brave? Not in 1914 and 1939, while we came to the assistance of Belgium and Poland, they hid under the table until the Germans and Japanese brought the war to their doorstep…..
