Killing rumours that she is the next in line to kill the Daleks in the title role of Doctor Who, Dame Helen Mirren has said that the next Doctor should be gay

Speaking to ITV’s Daybreak, Dame Helen said that she is “absolutely not” in line to replace Matt Smith as the star of the long running sci-fi series.

“I’m not going to be the first female Doctor Who – no, no, no,” she said. “I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that.”

The Oscar winner added: “I do think it’s well over-time to have a female Doctor Who. I think a gay, black female Doctor Who would be the best of all.”

Only 15% of the public would not welcome the next Doctor Who being played by a gay actor a poll for YouGov found.

In May, Dame Helen attended the gay festival, As One in the Park, following a well publicised rant against drummers promoting the event outside a performance of The Audience.
