Kristen Bell took to Twitter yesterday to ask her boyfriend, Dax Shepard to marry her. The couple had said they would not get married until same-sex couples in their state had the same right.

The two actors have dated since 2007 and got engaged in 2009.

However, they decided to postpone their marriage until same-sex marriage was once again legal in their home state of California.

Proposition 8, the voter initiative ballot that effectively banned same-sex marriage in California, was adopted in 2008. It ended a short period in which same-sex couples could marry in the state.

Bell previously told the Advocate: “The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends.

“That’s why we’ve been so hesitant. Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”

Yesterday the US Supreme Court effectively struck down Proposition 8 by voting not to take up the case, which should mean that same-sex weddings can resume in the US state of California.

Shortly after, Bell tweeted Shepard proposing that they get married. He has already agreed.
