Ireland: Gay Senator David Norris reveals he has cancer

  1. David Norris has worked tirelessly for gay rights in Ireland. I first met him in 1984 when he was a guest speaker at University College Cork.

    He was witty, articulate and above all a very brave out gay man for at the time, being homosexual in Ireland was a criminal offence.

    I hope he recovers, but physically and mentally.

    His story highlights the terrible personal toll that being a campaigner for gay rights can bring about.

    To every young person who has enjoyed the freedoms that people like David Norris has brought about, always remember that we were in dark, dark days.

    Many of our numbers, were lost on the way, some by their own hand, others murdered whose deaths were never properly investigated by the police.

    In the words of the late Derek Jarmin.

    “May you of a better future remember that we loved too..”
