  1. This article turned my stomach. Thank goodness things have changed since 1973 in many countries.

  2. Shameful. The Catholic Church has a lot more to apologize for than just this incident.

  3. “The church does not condone violence and hatred.”

    Since when?

  4. In 1979 or so, I was a dj at the Bourbon Pub and Parade Disco, the dance club above the bar on Bourbon Street. The Parade had just renovated its sound system and light show. On a decently busy weeknight, I was spinning when a transformer for one of the new strips of neon overheated and smoked. There was no fire, not that much smoke, but a very acrid smell filled the dance floor. The patrons fled the dance floor and the bar and did not return. It seemed like such a minor incident to me. I had to be educated on what I had just witnessed by one of the Quarter’s drag queens, who bore some facial scarring from burns he suffered in the Upstairs Lounge fire. That was the first time I had ever heard of this horrific incident. And even Adrian, the drag queen, didn’t really convey the horror of it the way this article and the photographs graphically depict. For the several years I lived and worked in the Quarter, that was the only time I ever heard it discussed. This chills and saddens me again.

  5. One step at a time. After only 40 years they’ve apologised for their silence. In another 40,000 years they may recognise that LGBT folk are, in fact, human; in another 40,000,000 years, they may actually welcome us.

    Or am I overly optimistic?

    1. You are over optimistic! Organised religon is for straight people. Although it it natural for mankind once they reach their 30s to seek to praise Allah in an organised way these institutions are by their very nature largely run and organised by the His enemies!

      1. ” Although it [is] natural for mankind once they reach their 30s to seek to praise Allah in an organised way”. Huh?

      2. Rodent, you need medication.

        That is all.

The only problem is that we would probably be extinct in 40,000,000 years time but the good new is that same-sex relationships will continue to happen between whatever species will supercede us.

Don’t be sorry for your silence, be sorry for your doctrine of inequality that you still teach, the reason for the silence. If you’re unapologetic for the cause, apologizing for the effect is not going to work.

  7. Once again the Catholic Church offers a useless apology way too late, not coupled with any actions that might show remorse. How entirely expected that Episcopalians offered their prayers for the dead and comforted the survivors and their loved ones. One hopes that the clergy of the Catholic Church would one day achieve the grace and kindness of Episcopalians, but we should not hold our breath.

  8. “IF we did not release a statement”, “IF we did not extend our care and condolences”? That sounds very much like a continued refusal to accept any real guilt or responsibility for the church’s actions and lack thereof, in relation to the incident. This is not a very good apology.

That’s the very point that stuck out to me in this article.

You either did or you did not make an apology. At least have the courtesy to find out before making the statement. I very much suspect they did not, and in that case it would be more appropriate to acknowledge that rather than this wishy wishy, “Mmmmm, well we might have, quite possibly, not really sure but, its certainly a possibility, without really being entirely clear on the matter, maybe, hard to tell, I don’t entirely recall the detail ….” sh1t.

Will the Catholic Church apologize for the Inquisition?

  10. The church has the blood of countless thousands of LGBT people on its hands – those beaten and murdered because of religious dogma and incitement to hatred. It’s time rational people rejected, once and for all, the dubious and hypocritical morality of organised religion. In my opinion, religion is a divisive and destructive force. It sets human aganist human. We can live without it …..

  11. A 40-year time-lag?
What will they be apologising for in 2053? I’ll be 97 but will be intrigued to find out if I’m still around.

  12. For myself, I do congratulate this Archbishop. Doing that and being member of the Roman Catholic Church, WOW that takes balls.

  13. There damed if they do…. and damed if they dont….thanks Rev for at least speaking out…
