  1. This is not a bill to ban same-sex marriage.

This is a bill to criminalise same-sex marriage and same-sex relationships.

This should be clear in the headline and not just the main text. The liberty of every gay Nigerian is at stake.

    1. Not just every “gay” Nigerians. Legislation of this sort is often the thin edge of the wedge. Lack of personal freedom and equality as desirable values ultimately threatens everyone at different times and in different ways.

      1. PS. The same applies to Russia as well.

First they came for the gays…………..

  2. And this is why Africa can piss off and die for all I care!! I’m done sending money to these clowns!

    1. Just out of curiosity, how much money did you send to Nigeria, say, last year?

      1. We all did, if taxes were paid by us.

  3. And 93% favoured boiling Missionaries in giant stewpots.

  4. In a country where helpers are shot for vaccinating children against polio the people are dumb and uneducated, so no surprise there. Sad.

…and we’re helping a lot of these savages stay alive, stop aid to these people.

    1. There not savages by default.

Despots and organized religion has lied to them for decades.

They are educated into the not to dissimilar corporate bull that we suffer.

Ive watched 40 years of TV “send money” cause they drink from a ditch
      cr@p.

      Live Aid, etc etc.

      More money chucked at them.

Lovely, they have lots of Arms to kill each other further and their despot has a huge plane.

Try liveleak.co.uk to see what these people are doing to each other

      1. Quit trying to excuse barbarism. They are responsible for their beliefs and actions.

    2. Now the racists are coming out…

      1. I’m over fifty and I have lived most of my life outside of Europe and have in passing visited more than 40 countries. In my opinion Europeans who do not aknowledge that other peoples have radically different values to themselves are “racist”! Nigeria and quite a few other countries are naturally anti-gay and very un-western in any number of ways. They are not going to change and their only response to Western charity and neo-colonialism is to have more children who think the same way they do! I honestly think that the West only really tolerates their existence because it needs their natural resources and immigrants.

  6. Indeed.

As I drive my Nigerian manufactured car to work tomorrow having lifted my back side from my Nigerian made bed and use my Nigerian made computer to analyze it all.

    Oops.

They make f all other than claims to the West for cash to feed their poor.

And the poor never receive it.

    Again Christianity poisons everything.

  7. AS we make advances in the west the evangelinazis realized that this is a losing cause, so now they moved to third world countries.

  8. Christopher in Canada 21 Jun 2013, 1:26am

Isn’t this the country where a child was just born with four legs? It made the news here today.

Don’t they have more important things to worry about?

  9. I’d like to see the practicalities of getting an honest answer from people about this in a country where you can go to jail for 14 years for promoting homosexuality?

A bit like asking Saudis in the street if they are pro gay?

Oh you are? Then we will just have to stone you to death in that case.

    Result 97% are against.

  10. While it’s easy to dismiss Nigeria as just another country full of religious nut-jobs, let’s not forget that it’s the 7th most populous country in the world. Its population is greatly under-educated and over-worked. It has hugely unexploited mineral wealth to rival the Middle East and organised crime pervades much of its society, including its government.

Bringing so-called Western enlightenment to a culture like this will not happen in our lifetime. Few of us can imagine a society as alien as that and while we can condemn the people for supporting anti-gay legislation, their lack of basic civil liberties and their right to personal freedom is actually what’s at stake here.

8% literacy in Nigeria. We have work to do.

    1. Har Davids 21 Jun 2013, 9:34am

We as in the political and religious leaders of Nigeraia who are, in general, content exploiting the ignorance and poverty of the rest of the country?

    2. WE have work to do? Really – how would a coach load of Gays change a country run by backward superstitious morons who are going to criminalize our very existence -

    3. It is not our responsibility to civilize an uncivilized country. That notion went out with colonialism. The best we can do is to cut them off the Western dole and try to rescue the victims of their barbarity.

      1. So colonialism was civiilsed?

Is it that difficult to think before you post?

  12. Jock S. Trap 21 Jun 2013, 9:17am

Nothing is ‘moral’ about this appalling bill. It’s completely shameful.

I also find it offensive when they say “homosexuality is not in the Nigerian culture” they clearly mean race and therefore it IS racism as well and homophobia. Something I would have thought history would have taught them something about.

  13. Har Davids 21 Jun 2013, 9:32am

Nigeria, land of corruption, religious nuttery and with a population expected to double in a generation. A hell-hole to be with or without this bill.

  14. Once a regime has control over someone’s sex life, they’ve got you! Religion has always WELL understood this. By introducing this legislation, Nigeria has demonstrated how backward it is and has shown a TOTAL disregard for human rights. Pity they have such short memories; it’s not that long ago since black Africans were treated by white people are sub-human. Now, they appear to be ‘poacher-turned-gamekeeper’ … and all as a result of the judo-christian religious nonsense introduced by their white slave masters (slavery also condoned by the bible …).

  15. Then I propose Outlawing being Nigerian – because its a life style choice and jepordizes family values!

  16. When I see nature programs from Africa I often think ” if those savage humans could just kill each other off and let the animals inherit the continent it would be better off”

    1. I trust you feel the same when you watch nature programmes about the Southern USA and Russia too?

  17. Nigerians have never been known for their intelligence or level of education. Neither have Ugandans or Russians.

    1. Nothing like a story such as this to bring out the racists
You can tell some have just been waitng for this opportunity…

    2. A ludicrous and profoundly ignorant generalisation.

  18. There is something quite reassuring about the regularity and speed with which you will try to introduce the subject of incest, Keith my sweet, it seems to be on your mind almost as much as faeces is. Perhaps you’ve been reading the OT a little too much.

    1. So you can’t stop obsessing about incest and faeces? If not, why not?

      1. If the question is relevant I’ll answer it, sweetie-pie. You might want to remind yourself (though with faeces and incest on – or in – the brain it might be a bit difficult for you to grasp) that the subject at hand is Nigeria and its anti-gay laws.

  19. GingerlyColors 21 Jun 2013, 4:20pm

So 92% of Nigerians are happy to pay their taxes to keep gay people in prison while other public services suffer in that cash-strapped country. Obviously if they have money to burn then they don’t need our foreign aid.
On the plus side at least the other 8% seem to be quite happy for gays to get married or have other, more important things to worry about. Some countries seem to be almost 100% opposed to gay rights.

    1. They don’t need our money in any case. The country is enormously wealthy because of its oil. Of course, that wealth is stolen by the thugs who run the country and keep them people ignorant and worked up about homosexuality.

      1. Jay, I have absolutely no idea why you bother posting? NONE of those laws affect you. This thread only serves as an excuse for you to exercise your own prejudices. I can only imagine what a gay Nigerian were to think if they read the comments on this page – a great example of LGBT solidarity .

      2. Staircase2 22 Jun 2013, 1:14pm

Those ‘thugs’ are largely Western Oil companies who as far as I understand own and/or control most of Nigeria’s oil resources no…?
