  1. Positive steps from Malta but I do hope that this bill will offer ALL the same rights as heterosexual marriage?

Civil Unions / Partnership sound OK although some of the ‘rights’ contained within the legislation are very limited. I hope Malta is fair to LGBT people. I like the Maltese and Malta and they deserve a good ‘generous’ law.

    1. We still have to wait and see what the draft bill (and ultimately the approved bill) will entail. However, a civil union/partnership does not necessarily give inferior rights to same-sex marriage. An ILGA scoreboard showed the UK at the top on LGBT rights in Europe in 2012, and the UK in 2012 still had a civil partnership. I am positive though, that it will be a decent civil union bill. Both parties are now publicly in agreement even on parental/adoption rights, and it appears that the adoption laws in Malta (which already allow for adoption by single persons irrelvant of their sexual orientation) need not be changed to allow for adoption by same-sex couples as the law refers to the word ‘spouses’ and not to the institution of marriage in itself. Hence, it will be the bill itself which will make it or break it.

  3. Lovely to see the Mediterranean getting so much progress at last. Same sex marriage along the Spanish and French coast along with Corsica. Genuine attempts at civil unions in Italy. Decriminalisation in North Cyprus. Attempts to add layers of improvement to LGBT protections in Adriatic-bordering Eastern Europe.
