This one will fail. No point worrying about it.

totally agree, if anything this just hi-lights why we need equal marriage . It will do us good and their cause more harm .

    2. This amendment MAY fail but nevertheless we must learn from it and never forget it.

This amendment demonstrates yet again the hatred that individuals like George Carey feel towards homosexual people.

This amendment demonstrates the lengths to which homophobes and bigots like George Carey are prepared to go in order to ensure that we remain “at the back of the bus”, third-class citizens, separate, apart, not equal with heterosexual people.

George Carey is not alone. There are dozens of “noble” lords who believe exactly as he does, who hate us as much as he does.

But worse still these individuals are just the tip of the iceberg. There are 100s of 1000s of “ordinary” heterosexual men and women out there who hate us just as much.

Thankfully the majority of heterosexual people approve of allowing us an equal share in the institution of marriage. We must be so grateful to them.

Use the peers list on to tell supportive lords why EQUAL marriage is so important to us.

Traditional marriage is a total nonsense concept and if Carey even took as Edmond to think (not easy for someone so dense) he’d realise that. Dear and Carey need to get their heads out of the arses accept that the world isn’t the 1950s paradise they wish (and in fact never was) and start behaving like legislators instead of children who don’t want others playing with their toys.

    1. bobbleobble 14 Jun 2013, 1:27pm

As Edmond = a second, what the hell was my iPad thinking!

“A ‘traditional marriage’ is one where the basis of the marriage is the voluntary union of one man and one woman for life, to the exclusion of all others.”

Basically if you request a “traditional marriage”, divorce will be illegal for you? Excellent! Now we’re talking!

Bigots talk a lot about “unintended consequences” of gay marriage, but I think this might help “strengthen” traditional marriage – by banning divorce!

      Nice one

  4. The old duffer just doesn’t get it does he?

Can I suggest that he picks up a dictionary to find out the meaning of the word Equality?

He is right about one thing though, not all relationships are the same, and that is what makes each relationship special. It would be a dull place if everyone was the same now wouldn’t it?

Move on Carey, your time has long passed.

It’s true….. “Christians hate Gays”. What more can one say? No-matter how they dress it up the theme is the same.

    1. I have many friends who are Christians. They don’t hate me nor do they hate their other homosexual or bisexual friends and family members.

  6. I have Christian beliefs. But it really annoys me when the Church sticks their damn oar in where it ought not.

  7. On the other hand 14 Jun 2013, 2:04pm

The term “traditional marriage” in the UK traditionally means a church wedding as opposed to one in a registry office. So this amendment is just plain confused and confusing.

    1. That There Other David 14 Jun 2013, 3:25pm

What he and his ilk are wanting is to muddy the legal definitions. It’s all an attempt to lay the foundations for various legal defences when they inevitably get pulled up for their future discrimination.

And it’s so blatantly transparent I can’t imagine anyone in the House of Lords is likely to fall for it.

  8. Jock S. Trap 14 Jun 2013, 2:17pm

Pointless. There is already a two tier system, religious and civil.

What he actually means is an ‘them’ and ‘us’ system on a three tier system.

It’s about nothing more than to show discrimination and I hope it get’s thrown out like the other warped, bigoted ideas.

  9. Oh dear, this long-retired irrelevant God botherer will simply not rest in peace without some notion of inequality for gay people, it’s coming down to pure semantics now for him. NEWS: the world is in financial and environmental crisis, the middle east is on fire, HAVEN’T YOU GOT ANYTHING BETTER TO DO OR PREACH ABOUT?

  10. None of these idiots seem to realise that including the “for life” bit in their amendments basically f**ks the whole point of their argument do they?

  11. So a “traditional” marriage is between a man and a woman for life , the founder of your church established your church so that he could ditch his “traditional ” marriage again and again-So was he wrong?
Careful Carey, that’s a slippery slope you don’t want to go down ; calling the legitimacy of your church into question
The unintended consequences being a severe kicking from the other C ofE Lords Spiritual and a tongue lashing from Betty Windsor the head of your church whose son ( a divorcee) is your future boss !

  12. Does this fool really have nothing better to do with his time? So much for his frigging “Christian” virtues!

  13. Keep at it Carey, you stupid, hate-filled old bigot. Every time you open your disgusting mouth to spew more hate into the world, the only thing that you achieve is to hasten the disestablishment of your church.

    1. That There Other David 14 Jun 2013, 3:28pm

Sadly, the majority of the UK population have by now stopped watching the debate. Disestablishment needs to come, and part of me hopes that when our current monarch is no longer with us it might actually happen. No chance before then though.

      1. I would agree with you on that, David. I don’t see her going anytime soon though. I sometimes feel that she’s hanging on in the hope that Charlie will fall off the perch first so that she can leave the monarchy in a safer pair of hands.

What an ungodly tosser that man is

…makes me wonder who he’s tabling those amendments FOR…

    And at what price…

  15. His legacy will be one of sustained resistance to equality,he will be viewed in the same way that those who opposed universal suffrage are now viewed.

  16. So what he wants to say, with the words of George Orwell, is that if there’ll be such a thing as equal marriages, then there must be something that qualifies that some marriages really are more equal than others.

  17. OK, how’s this for a definition: marriage is 2 people being joined together for life, promising to love and protect etc etc each other forever. That’s the point of marriage-showing how much you love someone so you want to be a family. No need to know what gender the two people are.
No-one could say polygamy shows that kind of love and commitment, and the love between siblings should always be entirely different to the marriage thing. So in short, what’s all his fuss about?

    1. Many people in polyamorous relaationships do indeed show “that kind of love and commitment”.

  18. The proposed amendments have no chance of passing…merely of slowing the passage of the bill and the granting of Royal Assent.

  19. He should go back to singing Kum By Ah and playing his tambourine on Spitting Image – it showed him for the joke he is

  20. Lord Carey should rather be speaking up for traditional divorce which is what his church owes it’s very existence to.
