A Christian television host has spoken on his online show to say that he thinks allowing gay members in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) will mean “tearing up” the organisation “to accommodate a few kids that want to do sex with each other”.

Back in May, the BSA’s final vote on the issue of gay members took place in Dallas-Fort Worth, Grapevine, where over 60% of the 1,400 strong national council of local leaders, voted to lift the national ban. The ban on adult members remains in place.

The lifting of the ban on youth members will not take place until January 2014.

Speaking on his own programme, 700 Club, on the Christian Broadcasting Network, Pat Robertson clamed that gay and lesbian people only made up 3% of the population, and that they were “willing to rip apart.. traditional marriage”, as well as the BSA itself.

“It’s a terrible shame that people who are homosexual amount to maximum two percent of the population, those who are lesbians about one percent, it’s a tiny minority. But they are willing to rip apart the framework of traditional marriage, to rip apart an organisation that has done so much good for young people, the Boy Scouts. To rip apart certain of these other things that we have counted as important in our society.

“All for one thing – that the way they do sex will be accepted in the mainstream of society. Two percent deciding what the rest of us does, and they are wiling to destrou it. And Hollywood and the so-called liberal media has jumped on board that this is the new civil rights. Well I don’t think so.”

He continues: ”It breaks your heart to see the Boy Scouts – because many of these scout troops are housed in churches, they have been sponsored by churches, for God and country, that is their motto, and morally straight, and so forth they have these pledges they make, and it has been a marvellous, and to see it torn up in order to accommodate a few kids that want to do sex with each other, it just boggles the mind.”

Earlier this year, Robertson questioned whether “predators and paedophiles” would be allowed to be Scout Masters if the Boy Scouts were to lift its ban on openly gay scouts, volunteers and staff.
