“,,, he should wear the traditional Russian dress of ”knee-length kaftan, a fur hat and leather boots,” instead.
Poor, dull, Mikhail. If you feel that leather boots and the excuse to wear fur are likely to cramp Sir Elton’s style, you clearly have little imagination for the possibilities.

    1. I misread the end of that quote as “…leather boobs”.
Perhaps I can fix that by looking at a few more of Elton John’s outfits. :D

I think he should cancel the concert.

I really fear for his and his supporters’ safety.

    1. I had thought of that possibility with Madona, and I see your point, but I also think that cancelling the concert would leave gay, gay-friendly, and I-couldn’t-care-less people without the chance to listen to and enjoy his performance.

I don’t know. It’s appalling what’s happening in Russia, I feel for gays and lesbians there. Nowhere else in the world Elton John’s outfit would be seen as a threatening propaganda.

LOL. I bet they think he should grow a big handlebar moustache too. How gay do they want him to look??!? :-)

Mikhail Abramyan: “Is tradeetional to wear very mesculine gimp suit from the Poolp Feection.”

    1. Looks like Borat should have been from Russia proper and not from one of the republics.

  5. “Mikhail Abramyan, leader of told RIA Novosti that Sir Elton’s outfits are “homosexual propaganda”, and that he should wear the traditional Russian dress of ”knee-length kaftan, a fur hat and leather boots,” instead.”

Somewhere along the line Mikhail and his comrades are getting Lenin mixed up with John Galliano.

  6. ‘Twould be ironic if Elton John, who was allowed to perform in the USSR by the Soviet authorities, were banned from performing in today’s “democratic” Russia.

Just by being allowed to play in the country he is ‘promoting’ homosexuality…as one of the most famously open gay men in the world hes sending out a message loud and clear “Be who you are without shame and fight the bigots….you can be openly gay and be successful”….or words to that effect you know what I mean…..Elton wont be told what to do or bow down to them so this should be interesting

  8. I hope he does some Elton’d-up versions of the silly Russian Orthodox priests garb, that would be wonderful and at the same time make it kinda awkward to say his outfits were homosexual propaganda.

Not content with threatening to blow up the world for four decades, the Russian Communists have turned into fashion police.
What type of clothing can be considered ‘gay’ anyway? Cowboy, Native American, biker, copper, soldier or sailor? Perhaps period military could be considered attire worn by gays, or maybe just a smart suit? We do have stereotypes such as those displayed by the Village People and gays sometimes dress flamboyantly but there is no such thing as a gay dress code.
Sir Elton John should not cave in to the bigots and he should go ahead with the concert. As Britain’s highest profile gay couple, Sir Elton and partner, David Furnish advanced the image of gay people here in the UK and there is no reason why he cannot do the same in Russia.

    1. It’s a great shame he’s knocked the top off his voice though. Age and a hard-living lifestyle for many years has taken a dreadful toll.

  10. Yes i admit it, Eltons marching band style jacket with massive gold epaulettes and huge Busby is the reason i am now gay.
FFS dont this lot have any actual real things to worry about- child poverty? the TB epidemic in Russia? the horrific traffic accident rates? No its all about the mad old queen in his silly outfits.

  11. Yeah, nothing remotely gay could be inferred from traditional Russian attire…
I wonder, has Mikhail ever seen the video for Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niqrrmev4mA
It might just blow his fragile little mind.
Personally I’ll be very disappointed if Elton can’t make something uber-camp out of a kaftan, fur hat and leather boots ensemble.
It has “Tom of Finland red army porn” written all over it.

    1. Christopher in Canada 8 Jun 2013, 1:06pm

Elton better start working out of he wants to pull off a Tom of Finland look…

      1. On second thoughts you’re right – I’ll leave the Tom of Finland pastiche to the backing dancers…

  12. Jock S. Trap 8 Jun 2013, 11:08am

Erm… ok… seems like they’re scrapping the barrel for any excuse… not good for anyone.

It’s bloody shameful enough let alone clothes coming into it. It’s just about deep rooting prejudice and it’s not good enough for at all.

  13. oh grow up Russia – What one of the greatest Gay men on the planet is wearing is no more gay propaganda than the man inside the clothes he wears – What a pathetic Country Russia has become.

  14. Helge Vladimir Tiller 8 Jun 2013, 11:44am

GO ON, Sir Elton ! Use whatever outfit You and the team wants. You are brave and strong. Not all Russians are idiots ! YOU have supporters in this country as well-

  15. A, J,Mainland 8 Jun 2013, 12:42pm

No doubt The Russian Orthodox church think Elton John is doomed for a jaunt in El

  16. .....Paddyswurds 8 Jun 2013, 8:34pm

Russia is an ignorant intellectually bereft, backward hole that is sliding inexorably back to the vile soviet era, and the obnoxious Putin is leading the charge… I say we leave them in glorious isolation and re establish punitive sanctions on all western goods and services and when they are starving again in long lines to shops with empty shelves when they may, just may wake up from the corrupt torpor they are currently wallowing in, they may just realise what side their bread is buttered on…..

    1. Christopher in Canada 9 Jun 2013, 12:37am

Hiow much Russian oil does Britain import?

      1. .....Paddyswurds 9 Jun 2013, 5:42pm

Too much…. If only one gallon!

  17. If he insists on playing in such an odiously backward and homophonic country, then Elton should at least bring back his Marie Antionette outfit for the concert and camp it up properly methinks.

Also, “The Tiny Dancer”? He’s the Rocket Man!

  18. Russia should stick to homegrown full-blooded heterosexual music like Tchaikovsky..

    1. .....Paddyswurds 9 Jun 2013, 8:39pm

One presumes you are being ironic. as Tchaikovsky was gay and wore some fairly racy gear for his time!

  19. Clearly, the mad hatters in the rump Russian Communist Party are so mired in the corruption and death of the Stalinist dictatorship that they have forgotten that the early communist movement was relatively liberal on sexual issues and for a brief period swept away the Tsarist regime’s anti-homosexual laws. Russia and the Eastern Block countries are arguably even worse today than under the Soviet tyranny, with a resurgent Orthodox Church and problems with ultra-nationalist groups.

A question I would like to ask is why in the UK, the broadcast regulator OFCOM sees fit to allow “Russia Today”/RT to transmit on cable and Freeview platforms with its 24/7 conspiranoia and borderline anti-semitism.

    1. Mark Adams 9 Jun 2013, 10:36pm

Dammit, I minused you by accident Poppy. This is exactly the point I was going to make, and I moved my mouse too far in the excitement.

This “Communist group” are so far from Lenin’s vision they may as well be members of UKIP.

  20. Have some commentors on here forgotton that several gay men have just recently been battered to death for even mentioning the fact that they are gay! Forget the outfits, I just hope Elton’s trip to Russia is more that just a jolly sing along concert, as if nothing has happened. He should have the balls to stand up to hatred and homophobia and not just turn up for the dosh! If no one complains, then the deaths will just carry on. I am surprised he is going at all, he should be citing the recent homophobic attacts as THE main reason for the concerts cancellation! That would make world headlines and focus the minds.
