  2. Yes – and a wake-up call to THT too.

I find it surprising for Lisa Power to talk so glibly about the importance of safer sex given the THT has neglected this message for the last few years.

Just take a look at the THT homepage and see how long it takes to find safer sex advice.

    1. The term “safer sex” is generally associated with penetrative anal sex – condoms significantly reduce the transmission of HIV – but unless they are used for oral sex as well STI’s can still be passed on, sometimes with very close body contact with a sore or chancre, as in the case of syphilis. As a gay man I have never witnessed condoms being used for oral sex & I doubt many others have either

Many individuals present with STI’s multiple times at GU clinics, gonorrhea infection is often an indicator of risky sex, so we should not underestimate the importance of interventions within the GU clinics to help prevent the spread of HIV – it is not as simple as to say THT are the sole providers of sexual health advice. Any STI infection can significantly increase the risk of acquiring HIV & I would include oral sex in the spectrum of risk in given circumstances

THT have in the past 18 months run a campaign on resistant gonorrhea, the information is out there, some choose not to take note

      1. Samuel B. 7 Jun 2013, 7:01am

Oh, so now let’s shift some implied blame onto the over-worked and chronically under-funded STi clinics, why don’t we?

May I remind you, W6, that it is these thankless frontline workers who have to deal with the consequences of THT’s neglect and failure of duty day in day out, and you have the impudence to suggest that they are somehow implicated in the breakdown of sexual health in the gay community?

I never thought even you would stoop so low as to try to pass the buck onto the very people whose jobs are made so much harder and more harrowing by the sheer ineptitude and wilful indifference of the HIV sector.

A new low for you, W6, and that is surely saying something, methinks.

        1. Samuel B. 7 Jun 2013, 7:08am

“THT have in the past 18 months run a campaign on resistant gonorrhea, the information is out there, some choose not to take note”

Yes, W6, but does it not occur to you that the information is not being properly targeted, and that the feeble and lacklustre way in which it is presented makes it vanish beneath the radar and wash over the heads of those it is aimed at?

Isn’t the very fact that the information you state is out there yet not having an impact vindicate the very arguments of 99% of the PN collective who criticise the THT et al as being ineffective and not fit for purpose where HIV/STI prevention are concerned?

          Well?!

      2. To be quite frank with you Samuel you can claim victory or whatever you are looking for on these comments pages. I really do not have the time or the energy to play your little mind games. It is very clear to me that whatever I post here you will disagree with, assuming you even bother to read what I post. Time & again I have tried to provide factual arguments, time and again I have tried to explain some basic HIV science to you, time & again you show that you have a poor understanding of basic HIV / STI information – these comments pages are littered with inaccuracies, half truths & down right lies you peddle about me & organisations like THT.

        1. Have it your way – quite frankly you are an insignificant pain in the backside, who’s sole purpose in using these comments pages is to discredit anyone or any organisation that does not happen to fully agree with your 1950′s approach to sexual health. You have been saying the same thing for as long as I can remember, yet there has been a big shift in recent years regarding Sexual Health & HIV prevention work – I have previously explained that you will continue to be frustrated by future prevention initiatives – why shoot the messenger (or the repeater) as you will no doubt label me?

HIV / Sexual Health is now the remit of local authorities, they will decide how & with whom they wish to commission prevention work. I suggest you lobby your local Director of Public Health & your MP to make known your clear dissatisfaction with THT as a service provider, maybe you will illicit the change you want to see? We all have a part to play, so start to take some ownership!

        2. Samuel B. 7 Jun 2013, 2:25pm

“…these comments pages are littered with inaccuracies, half truths & down right lies…”

Well do something about it then, W6, and stop trolling these boards!

You are here with a single-minded agenda to enforce your biased pinions and worldview on the rest of us, and because we don’t buy your evangelising or cheerleading for the corrupted HIV preventionists you keep throwing a tantrum and chucking your toys out of the pram.

Leave the rest of us alone already to comment as outraged individuals over the sector’s malpractises and misappropriation of taxpayers’ funding as is our right on these free and open boards!

          1. “You are here with a single-minded agenda to enforce your biased pinions and worldview on the rest of us” – this very statement applies to you Samuel, talk about shooting yourself in the foot……

The number of different commentators who actively engage in any HIV related stories says it all, I can count on 1 hand those who always take your view. I may be 1 individual who has a different view, so what? At least I have consistently provide up to date, relevant factual argument to support any claims I make, unlike you & those of your ilk!

As you have quite rightly argued in other comments pages, just because an individual does not agree with consensus opinion does that mean that their view is wrong? Seems to me there is one rule for Samuel Bass & a very different rule for Chris Williams in your book!

I have always taken my lead from an evidence based approach, which I am quite entitled to do, the fact that you do not believe in evidence based argument is really not my concern.

  3. Samuel B. 5 Jun 2013, 1:04pm

A wake-up call for whom exactly?

The sexual health/STI prevention charities who are – as these appalling infections rates prove once and for all – not fit for purpose?

What utter impudence of Lisa Power to speak out today citing recent THT funding cuts when these horrific STI rates among gay men are a direct consequence of THT policy when it WAS receiving full public funding.

This frankly ridiculous woman is now effectively saying restore our funding and we will maintain these appalling figures at this level; and if you don’t then they’ll get even worse.

And lest we forget THT has entitled itself to endless contracts/funding to sexually educate the mainstream public – including kids as young as 10 – so is also implicated in the wider mainstream STI epidemic.

It’s as if this wretched organisation has a deliberate policy and is working to an agenda to trash sexual health!

To anyone in any doubt that THT is not and has not ever been fit for purpose, I rest my case.

    1. Samuel B. 5 Jun 2013, 1:19pm

Also note that Lisa Power, like others at the top of the THT food chain who receive absorbitant salaries that bear no relation to the appalling failures of their prevention efforts – is a relic from a bygone era who refuses to jump off the THT gravy train and who has been content to see STI rates soar ever upwards over their 20 year-plus watch while initiating policies and programmes that have fuelled the sleazification of gay culture thereby creating ever more demand for their STI victim advices.

*Note how they only ever come out of their ivory towers to say more must be done and we all need to wake up only when official infection rates are published in the media.

Mark my words, the treacherous Mz Powell, like Sir Nick Partridge, may promise to do better but it’ll be business as usual and nothing will change until we form a core voice and demand their removal and a total overhaul of an org too set in its self-serving ways and tied to oaths of PC to know its a@$e from its elbow.

Mz. Power, like others at the top of the THT food chain who receive absorbitant salaries that bear little relation to the appalling failures of their prevention efforts – is a relic from a bygone era who refuses to jump off the THT gravy train and who has been content to see STI rates soar ever upwards over their 20 year-plus watch while initiating policies and programmes that have fuelled the sexualisation of gay culture thereby creating ever more demand for their STI victim advices.

*Note how they only ever come out of their ivory towers to say more must be done and we all need to wake up only when terrible infection rates are published in the media.

The treacherous Mz Powell, like Nick Partridge, may promise to do better but it’ll be business as usual and nothing will change until we form a core voice and demand their removal and a total overhaul of an org too set in its self-serving ways and tied to oaths of PC to know how to engage a common sense approach to sexual health.

      1. Nothing new from you then Samuel – the same very very tired phrases you roll out whenever there is an article involving THT. So where is this “core voice” that you have been calling for over the past 2 to 3 yrs? Where is the activism (or otherwise known to you as #aggressivehomosexuals), what are you personally doing to hold organisations such as THT to account – a big fat nothing that is what!

All we get is your outrage expressed as words – ACTION is what is needed not fine words! You are always happy to spend time posting here, but what about actually do something about a subject you claim to be so passionate about. Oh no, you prefer others to do the activism work whilst you just sit around and criticise.

We all know that there are a group of PN readers that loath THT, my question is what are you all doing about it, zilch, nadda, jack sh!t! You are always full of excuses when it comes to walking the talk………..

        1. Samuel B. 5 Jun 2013, 3:36pm

Somewhat disingenuous of the HIV sector’s loan apologist to deride the PN collective, who universally deride the THT et al for their abject failures, as a “small group”.

More so considering his default argument:- for US to get off our backsides and take affirmative action to exact change, notwithstanding that unlike W6 – who is effectively paid to troll the Internet shilling for the HIV sector 24/7 – we are all holding down full time jobs to pay our rents and put food on the table.

As for the blatant conceit in his counter-argument – that we should be the change we want to see in gay men’s health on a zero budget – isn’t it HE who uses his potentially game-changing Twitter feed to toady to, and serenade, the likes of Lisa Power and Matthew Hodson, exchanging inane platitudes and fripperies instead of holding them to account for their wilful indifference and faux verisimilitude?

W6, in aligning his worldview with the architects of mass STI infections, is a part of the problem.

          1. The usual reply, I can almost recite it verbatim!

Thanks for your constant plugging of my twitter account & that of others, very generous of you Samuel. Perhaps if you used social media you might be more influential in these matters – you seem to think I have huge influence with the various individuals I follow.

As always all talk & no action eh Samuel?

  4. oh dear, THT shot for doing too well, and then for not doing well enough. THT’s work on the STI front has proved too successful for many. Without THT getting access to my home last year I’d be dead by now.

The problem with this new strain of gonorrhoea is not that it’s resistant to so many of the drugs G was resistant to. I’m old enough to remember when G meant a couple of weeks’ antibiotics and “just have a wank instead”. And what happens? THT gets attacked for now warning about an illness it was never set up to address and cops the blame.

    1. Samuel B. 6 Jun 2013, 1:56pm

And exactly what planet are you living on, Steve?

However do you imagine these new strains of already existing STI’s are allowed to mutate and fester?

Here’s a clue, which paints a ghastly picture of an emerging reality for many gay men in London today:- one which is fuelling and funnelling the spread of these new, potentially incurable strains throughout our scene, particularly among a number of HIV pos men who clearly harbour a death wish:-

      http://m.vice.com/en_se/read/the-week-long-meth-fuelled-sex-parties-taking-over-londons-gay-scene

These animalistic, drug-crazed weekend long bareback orgies are a direct consequence of the sleazification of our culture over the past decade:- one that has been eagerly enabled, encouraged, aided and abetted by THT et al:-

      http://www.hardcell.org.uk

Perhaps time to ask some pressing questions of certain THT staffers who gave the green light to promote and foment the sleaze & hard sex scene, and indeed to declare their self-interest in it.

      1. Polarity63 6 Jun 2013, 2:54pm

        @ Samuel B

It is your personal perception that the hardcell website promotes sleaze & hard sex, I am sure others view it very differently – where are guys to get their information from to try & reduce the risk associated with sexual practices that do not appeal to you?

How you can make the huge leap from the problems associated with the drug party scene & implicate THT is totally incredible – as incredible as most of your argument on this thread. The problem of drug use goes far deeper than the simplistic view you are providing here.

It is obvious you have a huge issue with THT why not take it up with them directly & as someone else has said get off your backside & get involved

        1. Samuel B. 6 Jun 2013, 3:37pm

So what self-interest do you have to declare here, Polarity63?

A THT staffer desperately trying to damage limitate for a sector that is desperately clinging on in the face of austerity cuts, its credibility all but in tatters?

Or a sleaze scene Svengali, perchance, whose livelihood has been enriched by an HIV prevention sector more interested in promoting your interests than protecting those of young gay men writ large?

Or a “raw” porn label boss, whom our safe sex guardians have refused to speak out against of condemn?

It you seriously think it’s my perception alone that the various agendas of THT agenda do not add up to the wilfull sleazification of gay culture and the epidemic of hard drug addiction that accompanies it then you’re fooling only yourself.

Ironic that in the very week we win equal marriage rights, the underbelly is lifted on the squalid consequences of a rampant underground hard sex and drugs scene that THT, in tandem with GMFA, facilitated and enabled.

          1. Polarity63 8 Jun 2013, 4:57pm

Wow what a deluded & paranoid response, totally over the top & irrational……..
