Using the new site from Out4Marriage, to enable members of the public to LobbyALord to support equal marriage during  the current equal marriage debate, over 8,000 messages have been sent to peers.

Ninety-three peers signed up to speak at the second reading debate today and tomorrow, and several peers have noted the high volume of emails sent, urging them to support the Marriage (same sex couples) Bill.

Lobby a Lord, was launched last Friday by equal marriage campaign group Out4Marriage, and allows users to either lobby a randomly picked peer for the debate, or search and identify peers based on their equal marriage or LGBT rights stance.

The site displays information on the previous voting record of the peer, their declared stance on equal marriage, the number of times they have been lobbied using the site, and their twitter accounts, where available.

James-J Walsh Director of Campaigns for Out4Marriage, said: “We are calling for all equal marriage supporters, whether LGBT or straight/heterosexual to contact a peer using our new simpleLobbyALord.org website, as well as talk about the debate on social media and other websites too using #LobbyALord”.

At its peak, the site saw one lobby sent to a peer, every eight seconds, and at time of publication, 8342 lobbies had been sent.

The site this afternoon went down for a very short period, due to the high volume of traffic.

During today’s speeches, the House of Lords has already heard from Lord Dear, who has tabled an amendment which would cancel the second reading of the bill, who claimed the consultation process was “rigged”, and said that children will be made to “act out gay weddings in class”, if it passes.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, also spoke during the debate, to say that, despite personally supporting equality, and saying he regretted the church’s treatment of LGBT people, he would not support it.
