  1. Good on her for keeping to her word!

  2. A shame the crowds were not out in force to cheer her on:- reportedly only 4000 of the 16,000 tix on offer at £40 a pop were sold.

Police and stewards estimates report that only 5000 people attended, despite the license having been granted for 40,000. Can anyone who went back this up? Was turnout poor?

Ned Sherrin tells a good story about I think it was coral Browne in New York: she couldn’t be heard and complained vociferously to the management: next door’s Baptist church was drowning them out. The management was very apologetic and when it came to the next performance, they suspended a whole series of heavy black curtains at the back of the theatre to absorb the noise.

Coral Browne arrived and they said “There’ll be no problem in your next performance: we’ve hanged the blacks”. Coral said in the Aussie accent “”There was no need to goo THAT far”.

To all black guys- this isn’t racist- it’s just a camp old theatrical joke, and falls flat without the Aussie accent, so don’t be offended pls. This joke is from another era.

  5. God Bless Dame Helen and all who sail in her!
