  1. I bet any money all of the accusations are true. These places really are the scummiest little slut houses, I’d support all of them being shut down. And if people then go and use council funded facilities because having sex in a public gym, rather than a bedroom, fulfils some weird fantasy, then I would have them arrested. Given that the council isn’t condoning or authorising anyone to have sex in their swimming pools or gyms, I fail to see how they are being hypocritical?

    1. The Kennington sauna has had bareback parties on a wednesday for years….

      1. hello dave, not really. they had different parties on wednesday, one was for hiv positive men. What happend then, is what happens everywhere. At Chariots, at the hoist, at XXl and so on.
Sometimes they play safe, sometimes not.

    2. Chris . . . just because you don’t like them – don’t mean they are scummy . . . they are not my cup of tea, however many ‘closeted’ people go there . . .

Would you also close all the straight ‘massage parlours’ and ‘saunas’ as well? . . . there are thousands more of them than there are gay ones . . .

    3. Lion in Winter 22 May 2013, 7:14am

Wow – how Orwellian of you! You must be a real thrill in the bedroom… read: NOT.

  2. Sauna’s aren’t for everyone, such as Chris, but somepeople do enjoy the environment. If the venue didn’t organise or condone the events, can it really be held responsible for the actions of others? Also what goes on in the cubicles is between consenting adults. All other sauna’s offer cubicles and access to condoms etc, so this does seem a bit odd.

    1. Without resorting to Chris’ hysterical language, surely there is a case to be made that establishments that expressly exist for people to have casual and anonymous sexual encounters (and we all know that is what gay saunas entirely are) may not be in the interests of social and physical health. They are unarguably breeding grounds for disease. If such establishments did not exist, and given that cottaging has been more or less completely eradicated, a lot less casual encounters will take place. There will still be meets between individuals (organised by social media) and there will still be private parties – but there is surely an argument that the state should seek to actively discourage commercial premises which purely exist in order to provide a location for casual sex?

      1. Hysterical? If you think that’s hysterical I’d love to know how you interpret some of the other comments posted on Pinknews!

      2. yes that what the state exists for – to actively discourage people’s enjoyment…. (not)

        1. Enjoyment? That’s not what I’d read on the faces of the desperate ghosts I’ve seen on all night sessions in saunas. And anyone who says saunas don’t breed disease is simply a self-kidder. I’d have some respect for you if you said “ok disease is par for the couse” but complete denial that these places swim with crabs, gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia and HIV is just plain childish. As someone says below, who pays for the treatment? Ok we all pay in to the NHS but does that mean none of us have to take responsibility for our and othdr’s health? It’s not even about condoms – many STDs can be caught through oral sex. Grow up & have a proper debate about hedonism.

      3. @JoeSmoe what complete and utter rubbish
To call Sauna’s ‘breeding grounds for disease’ is absolute tosh.
For you to decide that it’s unacceptable for people to be having ‘casual’ sex in one place but ok in another is really hypocritical and very very silly.

Although the thing which irks me most is that you start off by saying you’re not going to resort to ‘hysterical language’…!

        1. Dumbbell, I didn’t say anything about what is or is not unacceptable. I said there ought to be a debate about whether premised should be licensed which exist solely to facilitate anonymous sexual encounters, which perforce must encourage the spread of disease. It would be impossible for the authorities to stop this kind of conduct on non-licensed premises, so that debate is out of the question – the former is not.

Anyone who says saunas aren’t breeding grounds for disease is an ideologue, in denial or an idiot.

      4. So hotels too? Brothels? How about bedrooms? No, sorry, the last is not a recognized commercial premises but then, commercial and casual sex do happen in them and houses? So your wish for a police-State would surely have to cast its net wide and far or fails. Beware what you wish for…

  3. Apu Ozitiva 21 May 2013, 6:27pm

Twice a month, Wednesday nights at the Lockerroom were HIV-only party but it always clearly stated that these were not bb parties and condoms would be provided.

  4. Aren’t all saunas bareback parties most weekends?

Didn’t the THT and GMFA used to bang on about the rights of HIV pos men to meet at underground sex clubs with names like ‘The Play Pit’ for this very purpose – perhaps the Met ought to be questioning them too?

And the last time I checked, a cage is inherently emasculating and as far removed from masculinity as is possible to be.

But then, what’s an inconsequential detail like than to unconscionable individuals like Mr. Horwood whose only interest is in feeding on and exploiting the needs of some gay men who sadly lack the requisite social skills to form meaningful connections in more salubrious environments.

“Considering Islington’s diverse community…why they don’t embrace this type of business like the other London boroughs do, I really don’t know.”

    Oh please!

It is self-serving sleaze purveyors like Mr Horwood who pose a greater threat to gays being regarded as worthy of equal rights than any arch homophobe going.

    1. Oh preacher, ramble on. You would soon call for section 28 to be reimposed. Mind you, if you worry about what adults do, then bedrooms should be checked and raided too. Do you think there’s a difference? Consenting sex between adults isnt indecent, whether it happens in a sauna, bedroom, hotel, forest, in a car, anywhere but so long as not in the public, it simply is decision by grown ups; so get off your high horse and come into reality.

And this attitude of blaming ‘gay men’ is so blind and primitive, it sounds absolutely foolish. It is the same folly that led some in the past to think that HIV only affects gay men. Bareback sex is wrong if the parties involved were forced to or in the case of ill health possibility, was not disclosed properly. And forget the name bareback, it simply means that’s how most people were conceived. Yes, one of the ways to make babies is to have bareback sex. So stop the sentiments and prejudice, its not useful, let alone, helpful.

  5. We now are at a crucial point in time with gaining equality. It is opportunity, it is time to exchange these few remaining islands of hedonism of the past, trading these in for the foundation of stability and respectability. It’s time to move on and grow from this. Let us not give any more ammunition to our detractors than they already have.

    1. Rubbish

      1. What is wrong with dismantlement their core weapon used against us? What is wrong with seeking the foundation of true love that hedonism can NEVER fulfill? What is wrong with growth and the gain of maturity? There should be more to life than chasing after something that has no substance, no future. You can say “rubbish” or “bullocks” all you want but truth is truth.

        1. Lion in Winter 22 May 2013, 7:20am

What’s wrong with living the life you CHOOSE to live and telling society to go to hell?? If you want to live in the 1950′s, go right ahead!! I for one prefer to use my own brain to think for myself.

There are worse things I could do,
than go with a boy or two…

          Take cold showers every day
          and throw my life away,
          on a dream that won’t come true…

          - Rizzo in GREASE

          1. The basic root components of a successful long term marriage (gay or straight) are in my comment. I assume you and others here in agreeance with you would rather hold on to “Raw Heat Pig Parties” or “Bareback Parties” rather than ATTEMPT to develop a personality and character conducive to a happy, loving and successful marriage. You might not be for gay marriage but I am. This has nothing to do with the 1950′s.

          2. Explain to me the fine details of a future rooted in hedonism? Educate me please.

          3. He can’t, Charles, because the swivel-eyed gay militants masquerading as liberationists want all legitimate moral boundaries totally obliterated and no one to have to accept any personal responsibility whatsoever.

The logical outcome, eventually, would be a world not unlike Dante’s Inferno, with all laws abolished and the total right to do as we pleased:- and I don’t need to give you any examples here in case you have a queasy tummy…

        2. Your responses from the “do as we please and sod everyone else” progressives and liberationists reveals your answer, Charles.

The radical element defend the right of gay men to bareback with hedonistic gay abandon at sleaze establishments and catch HIV on the NHS and the drugs that keep you alive will be funded by all those wonderful straights who think we are the best thing since sliced bread.

It is this same lunatic fringe who also push hardest for gay marriage, as if the worst excesses of gay culture are compatible with an institution that binds two people together in matrimony for better or worse.

They want their cake and want to eat it too, and that is one reason I’ve not been an ardent proponent for gay marriage, because many of us simply cannot take seriously the responsibilities of commitment.

All civil partnerships I’ve ever attended have all collapsed because the temptation of hedonistic urges ultimately proved greater than the need for loyalty and faithfulness.

          1. We have in our midst our very own Gerald Howarth – anyone who does not agree with Samuel is PC indoctrinated & is obviously an #aggressivehomosexual – I suggest you go & join the ranks of the Tory / UKIP supporters & activists Samuel, you will feel very at home there amongst the “loons”

            http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2013/05/20/tory-mp-gerald-howarth-there-are-plenty-in-the-aggressive-homosexual-community-who-want-more-than-just-same-sex-marriage/

As you oft say Mr Bass – the truth will out & we can clearly see your right wing agenda

  6. @Samuel B.

“Didn’t the THT and GMFA used to bang on about the rights of HIV pos men to meet at underground sex clubs with names like ‘The Play Pit’ for this very purpose – perhaps the Met ought to be questioning them too?”

One presumes you have complained to PN about their decision to promote THT & the “It Starts With Me Campaign” during the Spring & Summer months?

It’s good to see that you still like to contribute in your predictable way – although I note you have been rather quiet of late, not joining in with the debates on same sex marriage or even to comment on the recent THT & NAT stories, perhaps you have been very busy?

    1. The THT and GMFA have failed in their missions to reduce HIV infection.

I think the directors of these organisations need to be fired and their massive salaries spent on HIV prevention.

      1. Well said, SteveC, even if saying it as it inadvertently feeds and gives succour to one of PN’s most notorious, ridiculous and vicious trolls.

      2. You only have to look at Greece to understand what failure looks like in terms of prevention work, they have seen a 200% increase in new infections since 2010 when austerity measures have cut all prevention funding.

It is difficult to quantify what new infection rates would be if there was no prevention work here in the UK, it is difficult to prove that THT have failed – certainly the DoH must have confidence in THT as an organisation.

There are many different organisations around the UK involved in prevention work do you think they have also failed? How about the role GU clinics & GP’s have in preventative work?

        1. Says W6_Bloke who spends every waking hour cosying up to the likes of Matthew Hodson and Lisa Power on his Twitter feed.

W6 then comes on to these boards without declaring his vested interest where the HIV sector is concerned to rain hell and fury on anyone and everyone who holds the HIV sector to account for the devastation they have inflicted on successive generations of poorly educated and appallingly-informed gay men.

And note he has no contribution whatsoever to make with regard to any of the myriad other topics of debate presented daily on PN, because they are not on his narrow world-view agenda.

That is the very definition of the ultimate troll and corporate shill.

          1. @ Samuel
Stick to the facts Mr Bass, other readers are not interested in your personal vendetta against me………….anyone who is interested can see the wide variety of individuals I follow & who follow me on Twitter, you should try it sometime you may be able to exert some influence on the subjects you claim to care so passionately about!

As a young gay man (allegedly) I am surprised you have not embraced social media. That said, it would seem you are far too closeted & ashamed of yourself to create a public social media account, one wonders what you have to hide???

What do you believe my “vested interest” is Samuel? I have never had a paid position with THT or GMFA or any other HIV organisation / Pharma Co, so I think you are clearly deluded in your assertions. You never hold the “HIV Sector” to account, you just bitch & spout utter lies about such organisations – sadly some commentators here are too lazy to go find the truth for themselves & believe your warped views.

    2. “I note you have been rather quiet of late, not joining in with the debates on same sex marriage or even to comment on the recent THT & NAT stories, perhaps you have been very busy?”

Thanks for your faux concern, W6, but most of us do have lives outside cyberspace and are not paid at the tax payers’ expense to lurk in every corner of the Internet in order to police and troll all content relating to your specific agenda, ready to pounce on any unsuspecting victim who happens to step out of line with your mind-made-up / this-lady’s-not-for-turning groupthink consensus:- in your case all things HIV.

It must be a lonely existence, granted, but try to work on the bitterness and bile evident in your every gasp, which must do your stress levels no good whatsoever.

Samuel B’s top tip:- try surgically detaching yourself from your gummed up keyboard, have faith that your mouse will still be alive and well without your undying devotion and companionship, and try getting out and about!

      1. As I say Mr Bass – stick to the facts you have before you, rather than conjure up falsehoods that are clearly designed to discredit anyone who does not agree with your very tired & outdated view of the world.

What are your thoughts on PN promoting the current “It Starts With Me Campaign” you must be very disappointed? No doubt we can add PN to the list of organisations you will start to bitch about!

        1. An absolute misfire and far too little too late if you really want to know my opinion of THT’s latest frittering away of my hard-earned tax, W6.

But then, that would be of no concern to someone who presumably pays no income tax yet devotes their life to pushing for expensive treatment and testing-led prevention initiatives over effective safer sex education while other areas of the NHS are being deprived of vital cancer and Alzheimer’s drugs, would it now Shirley?

Oops, I mean Chris Williams @W6_bloke of the Twittersphere where insecure people desperate to be liked relish in telling anyone stupid enough to want to know what they spread on their toast each morning, all in less than 140 letters and where words of more than two syllables are frowned upon.

I think that says it all in a nutshell really!

          1. “NHS are being deprived of vital cancer and Alzheimer’s drugs” – yet again the ideology surfaces for all to see – Cancer & Alzheimer’s are “worthy conditions” in the warped mind of Mr Samuel Bass, whereas HIV drugs are not, is this not what you are implying? How is it that you clearly believe ARV’s are toxic yet drugs to treat Cancer & Alzheimer’s are not? Are the drug companies not profiting out of all drugs they market? Double standards to fit the argument, but then that is all we get from you!

As I have said many times, l hope you are not one day in need of said HIV treatment – as a sexually active adult you are at some risk of contracting HIV no matter how careful you may think you are, I read on a daily basis of individuals getting unexpected positive HIV results. Think on Mr Bass!

  7. Which gay sauna do you frequent Keith././ ? Only a rabid self-hating closet case would think in such twisted thoughts.

  8. Lion in Winter 22 May 2013, 7:25am

Neg guys are jealous that the poz guys don’t need to struggle with condoms. That’s all this is. They want to have condomless sex as much as anyone else, but can’t – unless they can be sure the guy they are with is a virgin.

  9. Your missing the point here guys. The local council wanted to close a Sauna down because they were being homophobic and nothing more. I believe in freedoms and as long as nobody is hurt why shouldn’t there be saunas everywhere. Why on earth did a council be so homophobic. The person in charge of denying this license needs giving the sack.

    1. Is someone hurt by catching an STD?

  10. Spanner1960 22 May 2013, 7:14pm

I love the way so many react to the accusation that some men are total sluts and will fcuk anyone, anywhere, anytime, condoms optional. Whilst I appreciate not everyone is like this, the hypocrisy here is staggering. As if anyone could possibly do such things, when most of us have been there, done that or certainly witnessed it. There is one barrel-load of self-denial flying around here.
