Fire has damaged several venues at the Yumbo Centre, home to several LGBT clubs, bars and shops in the resort of Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria, with reports suggesting the blaze could have been started deliberately.

The fire occurred during the busy weekend of Maspalomas Pride, although businesses at the Yumbo Centre were closed at the time of the incident.

Community site Laprovincia reports at least four terraces of the second floor complex were engulfed in flames on Monday morning.

According to local sources, the fire broke out at around 08.20am. The blaze was put out by firefighters with no loss of life or injuries reported.

It is believed police are treating the incident as potential arson; a suspect was detained by officers on Monday.

Playa del Ingles is a popular LGBT European holiday destination, last year’s Maspalomas Pride was attended by over 100,000 people.
