Actor Leonardo DiCaprio donated $61,000 (£40,000) to GLAAD during its 24th annual Media Awards at the weekend, in Los Angeles.

The Inception star not only hosted part of the awards show, handing over an award to top entertainment attorney, Steve Warren, he also donated the money through a number of channels throughout the evening.

Initially donating $25,000 (£16,400), during a pledge drive by actor Wilson Cruz, he went on to bid $22,000 (£14,432) for an African safari, donated by Micato Safaris.

The four-night, five-day safari includes two round-trip business elite tickets from Delta airline, as well as accommodation at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, reports E!.

He later bid a further $14,000 (£9184) for a photo of Marilyn Monroe from the Andrew Weiss gallery in LA, during a silent auction.

during the show, DiCaprio, star of the upcoming ‘The Great Gatsby’ and famous for such roles as J Edgar Hoover, tweeted: “It’s been a big year for #LGBT issues – I’m very proud to be at #GLAADAwards tonight to support their important work.”

In his acceptance speech at the GLAAD Media Awards last weekend, former US President Bill Clinton, noted his daughter’s part in his change in stance on the issue of equal marriage.

Bill Clinton was a controversial choice for the Advocate for Change award, as he signed the Defense of Marriage Act into law during his presidency.

When presenting his award, Hunger Games actor Jennifer Lawrence, slipped up when pronouncing Clinton’s name, but recovered, and he was unfazed by the brief mistake.

Other presenters and attendees included Tobey Maguire, Matt Bomer, Elle Fanning, Betty White, Chris Evans, Mary Steenburgen, Ted Danson, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson.
