Lord Browne: I am still surprised at how cautious businesses are in accepting diversity

    He’s saying that most British businessmen are greedy and homophobic, I’d never have guessed.That’s probably why most of them support the Tory party rather than the greens.

        No it’s not, most UK businessmen gravitate towards the Tory party, what planet do you live on? They support the Tories in order to protect their own selfish interests and Lord Browne himself said they are selfish and homophobic.

  2. If he’s right, and I suppose he is, then business needs to catch up. Evidence suggests that inclusive, diversity-valuing and respectful workplaces are more productive and usually have workers who will go the extra mile and feel more committed to the company or organisation. Affirming and equal opps cultures are actually more efficient.

    He’s also right about the lack of a philanthropic tradition in the UK. We have a reputation for being stingy. Sir Richard Branson I would think could get something started.

    The city has always been homophobic, he’s right about that. More than half in the Tory party are homophobic too just look at who voted no to equal marriage and they claim they’re not because they have ‘gay friends’. For far too long, the workplace has catered to heteros shoving their sexuality down our throats. It’s about time that changed.

    1. The only problem is when you’re in a minority you have to put up with the majority, nothing much can change that.Even all the equality laws going will never change some people.

        1. Are you certain about that? I really don’t see the evidence.
          I’ll say we are getting somewhere when we’ve had an out Prime Minister and some of the major football teams, which are businesses after all, have out gay people at their head.

There used to be a philanthropic tradition in the UK though – Angela Burdett Coutts, the 7th Earl of Shaftersbury, Thomas Coram, John Passmore Edwards, Sir Henry Wellcome etc. The interesting, if depressing question is why it appears to have disappeared in the course of the 20c, unlike in the US. The establishment of the welfare state seems to have made individual givers feel their assistance was no longer necessary.

      1. I suspect that philanthropy isn’t thought to be needed when the State fulfils that role.

In one particular company that shall remain nameless they’re extremely keen to make a very big, public show of accepting diversity and equality towards their LGBT and women workers yet they still see no contradiction in paying their heterosexual male workers substantially more than their LGBT and women workers for doing exactly the same jobs(!) I suspect this activity may be endemic.

  5. No one talks about Lord Browne running one of the nastiest, greedy, murdering companies that exists. He deserves everything he gets.

    1. He deserves censure, if guilty of it, for participating in rapacious capitalism. Nobody deserves discrimination, hostility or harassment for who they are.

  7. British business is not only homophobic. Many are transphobic, intersex phobic, racist, misogynistic, anti-disabled, in fact anything that does not fit their narrow view of ‘normality’. Even companies which advertise that they are “an equal opportunity employer” do not carry this through into practice.

    The hate speech voiced against same sex marriage is supporting the discrimination already rife in some countries (whatever happened to the UK law ‘against ‘hate speech.’ In the United Kingdom, several statutes criminalise hate speech against several categories of persons. The statutes forbid communication which is hateful, threatening, abusive, or insulting and which targets a person on account of skin colour, race, disability, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origin, religion, or sexual orientation. The penalties for hate speech include fines, imprisonment, or both.
