  1. Was certainly a great speech by this MP, shame that many others won’t speak out against some of the stupidity in the way that he has done!

  2. I wish more politicians had his sense of perspective and humor.

If you need a link to the video and his rainbow image…

  3. What is perhaps missed is that this politician is from New Zealand equivalent of the Tory party in the UK.

    1. I enjoyed that too – particularly the nervous looks from his party colleagues!

  4. It’s a terrific speech, and I think it’s great that it’s gone viral – its popularity is fully deserved.

It’s also telling that he’s a conservative, and it’s shameful that even conservatives in NZ and in the UK are now more progressive than Labor in Australia.

This should be mandatory viewing in Parliament! Send it to as many MPs in opposition as we can think of.

  6. “I also had a leader telling me I would burn in the fires of hell for eternity, and that was a bad mistake, because I’ve got a degree in physics… I will last 2.1 seconds – it’s hardly eternity”

    That is hilarious

  7. Well said Sir. Common sense and perspective.

  8. Big Gay Rainbow….I will always remember that.

  9. What a superb speech…it is polite but extremely entertaining as he pokes fun at the religious bigots and hypocrites

Perhaps North Korea’s Kim Jong Un could take a leaf out of Maurice Williamson’s book.

Just as an aside the bill received royal assent today and will come into effect in August. Technically that makes New Zealand the twelfth nation to legalise SSM since Uruguay’s president hasn’t yet signed their bill.

  12. A wonderful speech and as someone else has said, should be required viewing for our own MP’s.
