British actor Andrew Garfield has come out in strong support of equal marriage, questioning how anybody can “argue against compassion and understanding”.

The Amazing Spiderman Actor, publicly expressed his support for same-sex couples having the right to marry during an interview with the Times.

He said he opposed “the injustice of how homosexuals are treated, the imbalance that still exists in terms of rights and judgements,” Garfield explained.”

“Of course I’m in favour of marriage equality. Same-sex couples should have the same rights as anyone else,” he continued.

“There is no argument against equality,” he said, asking: “How can anyone argue against compassion and understanding?”

In the interview, Garfield discussed performing in Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing in 2006 at the Sound Theatre in London, which is currently being performed at the Arts Theatre in London for its 20th year anniversary, before going on tour.

On the play, he said: “Jonathan wrote such a powerful play, the simplicity of it is that it’s a profound, beautiful story of how love can transform you – gay, straight, bi, lesbian, whoever.”

Garfield will appear alongside his girlfriend Emma Stone in the Amazing Spider Man 2, which will premier in May 2014.

Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons recently said he should have “buttoned” his lip when he joked equal marriage could lead to fathers marrying their sons, and admitted that he doesn’t know the difference between a same-sex marriage and a civil partnership.

Earlier this month, Irons, 64, caused a stir when he suggested to Huff Post Live that equal marriage legislation could be manipulated to allow fathers to pass on their estates to their sons without being taxed.
