Zambia: Gay rights activist Paul Kasonkomona granted bail

  1. So Mr Kasonkomona is being charged with being “idle and disorderly in a public place”. Early reports suggested he was arrested for “promoting homosexuality”, but that is not a crime, so he could not be charged for it.

    Mr Kasonkomona was neither idle nor disorderly. He was peacefully expressing his views. Mr Kasonkomona has not broken this (or any other) law, and the police are trying to misuse a law on antisocial behaviour to suppress free speech.

    All Zambians who support free speech should be very concerned about this inappropriate and illegal use of the law, whatever you think about Mr Kasonkomona’s views.
