Frank Ocean has been named the most powerful LGBT figure in America’s music industry.

The R&B singer and rapper polled tenth in Out magazine’s 2013 Power List.

Ocean admitted in an open letter online last year that he had been in love with a man, ahead of the release of his official debut album Channel Orange in July.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres comes second in the list.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy came third, while the show’s star Jane Lynch trailed behind him at 14.

Jodie Foster who publically came out during the Golden Globes earlier this year failed to make the list.

Tim Cook, the 52-year-old CEO of Apple topped the list yet again for a third year running, despite not being openly gay.

The magazine’s editor Aaron Hicklin defended the decision to list stars who have not publically discussed their sexuality.

“I think one of the most phenomenal things in American society is that the argument for being in the closet is being eroded by progress, and it seems increasingly arcane – to a lot of people – for a public figure to be in the closet,” he said.
