US evangelical organisation the American Decency Association (ADA) has published an article in response to a backlash it received in response to a piece which attacked basketball Magic Johnson for supporting his gay son, and reiterated its stance that he should not support him.
Bill Johnson of the ADA wrote the most recent piece, who also authored last week’s article attacking basketball star Magic Johnson, for speaking out in support of his gay son who publicly came out last weekend.
He began by saying that Americans had “turned their back upon the Lord,” and “mocked” and “blasphemed” his word and his name, thus setting itself “up for judgement”.
Johnson went on to claim that some argued that God had removed his “hand of protection” from America, and commented on what he said was the extinction of “one nation under God”.
He said: “However, there has been a RELENTLESS attack upon God and upon godliness. The evidences of the spiritual/moral slide has been lengthy and increasingly the “chickens have come home to roost.
“Americans love their televisions, stories and sitcoms and with the passing years knowing the difference between right and wrong has eroded through the concerted campaign of Hollywood.”
He went on to say that television shows were “shoving homosexuality” down American’s throats, and made links between polygamy, paedophilia, adultery and equal marriage.
“Network television began to shove homosexuality down our throats years ago: America’s most powerful influence makers have intensified their public relations blitz aimed at convincing Americans that homosexual behavior is normal and more specifically, that homosexual ‘marriage’ should be legalized.
“In the book of Judges, Israel turned their backs upon God. Every man did what was right in his own eyes. To get man’s attention, God allowed the natural consequences of godlessness to have its way. Godlessness includes homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, adultery, premarital sex, polygamy, pedophilia, … the list goes on and on.”
He again wrote that Magic Johnson should not support his son EJ, who came out publicly last week to the full support of his family.
“Yet Magic Johnson, whose illicit sexual lifestyle resulted in his HIV status, is ‘proud’ of his son for choosing an equally destructive lifestyle. Sin degrades, addicts, devastates, divides, destroys and is judged and will be ultimately be judged by a Holy God when we go before him when our life here comes to an end.
“Network television and cable TV will trumpet, promote, propagandize and bully their way by continuing to spend billions of dollars to fool a godless generation. Untold numbers will be duped and will follow darkness rather than follow the light.”
The American Decency Association previously attacked the inclusive TV show Glee, created by the New Normal’s Ryan Murphy, and which often tackles issues such as sexuality, gender identity and disability, saying that it “promotes homosexuality”, and “illicit sexuality”.
Magic said that he had known for a while that EJ was gay, and that he had always supported him. He said: “He’s just happy that it is out. I’m behind him a million percent. This is really wonderful for him.”
Magic Johnson quit professional basketball in 1991, after he announced he was HIV positive. He has since taken over as part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Magic has also been an advocate for HIV and AIDS prevention charities, and an advocate of safe sex.
