A Republican chairwoman has claimed that, if equal marriage became legal, straight people would pretend to be gay, and marry each other in order to “abuse” the system.

Republican chair for east Cobb, Sue Everhart, was asked if he was aware of the Human Rights Campaign’s viral social media campaign for which hundreds of thousands of social media users took to Facebook and Twitter, to change their profile pictures to an altered version of the HRC logo, in support of equal marriage.

Everhart replied: “Lord, I’m going to get in trouble over this, but it is not natural for two women or two men to be married,” she said. “If it was natural, they would have the equipment to have a sexual relationship.”

She maintained that she respected all US citizens, however said that she thought people would defraud the marriage system if equal marriage were to become legal, reports the Marietta Daily Journal.

“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” she said. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits?

“I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”

The GOP chair said that if she had a young child she would not want them to have gay parents, as that would display to them that same-sex marriage is allowed.

“You’re creating with this child that it’s a lifestyle, don’t go out and marry someone else of a different sex because this is natural,” she said.

“But if I had a next door neighbor who was in a gay relationship, I could be just as friendly to them as I could be to you and your wife or anybody else. I’m not saying that we ostracize them or anything like that. I’m just saying I’m against marriage because once you get the gay marriage you get everything else.”

The Huffington Post reports that “there isn’t any evidence of widespread fraud following the adoption of gay marriage in nine states and the District of Columbia.”

The son of former president Ronald Reagan recently said legalising equal marriage will lead to “polygamy, bestiality and perhaps even murder.”

“It’s ultimately about changing the culture of the entire country,” Michael Reagan wrote in an article for the Ironton Tribune.
