  1. I could make a generalised, insulting comment about the lack of brain cells among over-paid ball-kickers. But that would be stereotyping them. These people are role models (I know. Insane, isn’t it?). So they REALLY should be more careful before making comments which are seized on by the mindless as acceptable. They are not.

  2. Just goes to show that even amongst the more enlightened of people who find homophobia unacceptable there exists still a great deal of deeply rooted profound transphobia. Watched a BBC news report about kicking homophobia out of football on Saturday which was encouraging as it shows that attitudes are changing and are being covered by the ‘mainstream’ media. (Ps. Who knows, in a few decade’s time the typically archaic BBC might even allow same sex dancing couples on Strictly at this rate!)

Yet, I can’t recall the Beeb even mentioning the ‘trans’ word in public or even acknowledging that transphobia exists. Is the T-word on Auntie Beeb’s list of banned swear words, one wonders?

Joey Barton, like many young men in particular, is still on a bit of a learning curve when it comes to our communities. Although his heart’s in the right place his brain still sometimes heads off on its hols down a different dual carriageway.

I suspect now that this has been pointed out to him he’ll apologise, and he’ll mean it. Does it excuse him from making the comments in the first place? No. However, I’m prepared to be charitable. He’s not a hater.

    1. It sounded like trash talk to me. I agree about being charitable this time.

  4. I’ll show him what a REAL ladyboy looks like… doubt he will be able to type at all afterwards…

  5. Hang on is this the same Joey Barton who was caught doing an interview with a fake French accent and mannerisms?

    1. That There Other David 3 Apr 2013, 3:21pm

Yep, but that can happen. When I’m switching between Spanish and English (for those times when the company is mixed) I’ll occasionally carry the “castillian growl” into English speaking. Can’t help it. I learned the other language as an adult and my poor Anglo-Saxon wired brain sometimes needs time to catch up, however funny my sudden deep-tone Spanglish might appear to others.

    2. I think people have misunderstood my sacarsm … I meant how can anyone take him serious because of his misplaced French accent

  6. This is really disappointing given he’s one of the very few footballers who’s taken a positive public stance about gayness and football. Wasn’t he on that programme Justin Fashanu’s niece made, saying how much he loved his uncle who was gay and that he couldn’t understand why people make such a ig deal about sexuality?

  7. i think we should remember that physical agility has nothing to do with mental prowess. well, what can you do?

    1. Which is why he was so bothered by nothing and takes the low IQ mentality to behave like a big wimp himself. Poor Joe, some body is talking about him. Boohoo… .

  8. Liam the God 3 Apr 2013, 3:06pm

They let him out of prison??

  9. Isn’t it odd? When a ‘man’ can kick a football around everything seems to be forgiven by the great British public – he can be a racist, a misogynist, a child abuser and in the latest two cases a fascist and a transphobic bigot. Strange too, how people are ready to be so forgiving when a gendernormative bloke says something like this, yet if a lefty, feminist female like Suzanne Moore had said something half as bad she would have been (rightly imo) condemned. Btw…many of us in the T community are well aware that we’re really considered poor relations at best within LGB circles and the fact that an anti-homophobia campaigner like Barton can be so transphobic is evidence that in many cases we’re not wanted.

    1. The differences between Joey Barton and Suzanne Moore…. Hmm… that’s a poser, isn’t it?
      You’re making a stupid argument.
Moore has been highly educated and makes her career as a commentator and contrarian. Barton is a footballer of limited education. His job is kicking a ball about. He doesn’t make a penny out of trying to educate himself, nor from standing up for gay people.

Also, he agrees he’s a work in progress when it comes to educating himself. Moore, thinks she can tell other people how to think.

While I’d call Moore transphobic because she earned money writing what she did, I’ll hold fire and call Barton merely ‘ill-considered’ until he clarifies his position or evolves. Unles you can show a history of Barton making similar comments (even after he’s been told they’re wrong), you can’t call him a transphobic bigot.

Unlike Moore, Barton has shown a willingness to learn, educate and change himself – and frequently been ridiculed for it.

  10. another moron in foot ball shorts. have you ever seen anything looking more gay while claiming to be straight. is he trying for a Beckham look! perhaps he needs to sack his stylist.

You do realise that was homophobic right…?

  11. Staircase2 4 Apr 2013, 1:45pm

Really odd to have that coming from Joey Barton. He usually has some very thoughtful things to say on the subject of homophobia and racism

  12. This bloke just hasn’t a clue. One thing after another with him. If he’s not ranting at footballers, he’s ranting at Celebrities. Wasn’t only a few days ago he was having a go at Justin Bieber. Then Zlatan Ibrahimovic not long ago, because of his appearance.

This guy needs a serious lesson in manners, respect and anger management.

I remember all well, when he played for QPR against Manchester City last season, and got off with a 7 match ban, for his ridiculous antics towards 3 City players, and an Official.

Surprised he’s still able to play football for anybody.
