Well, that’s a lot more conciliatory than anything his predecessor could ever come up with. Maybe there’s hope for the CoE after all. Williams was far too dogmatic and set in his ways. Let’s hope this is a good sign.

I still can’t understand the incredible role player nonsense proferred by Cameron. To much bloody deferrence to them for my comfort level.

Sadly archbishop what you are saying here only works on paper…not real life..it all sounds good but in reality it is BS. It’s time for you and the other clergy to wake up and count how many are in the pews…then reflect on why the pews are empty…the kind of crap you are spewing out might just have something to do with the empty pews…Just something to think about since I was involved in the church for a long time…lay minister and all the other positions up the chain…plus a religious education teacher for 20+ years…90% of what you think is important has no connection to daily life for most people especially the youth..

  3. Basically asking vicars to be nice to each other since, now the vote’s over, some of the spineless faithful are now chiming up with “oh yeah bigotry – that’s bad, honest!” which could turn into an argument! And god forbid that vicars get passionate and argue about treating people as lesser beings! Better everyone keep quiet and obedient and “graceful” so we can pretend misogyny and homophobia are acceptable

It would be a lot more fun if they weren’t graceful and had a good old punch up, I bet the Archbishop has a mean left hook, they don’t call him “bruiser” Wellby for nothing.

    1. I bet Giles Fraser has a mean left hook!

  6. More empty words. He’s trying to play both sides – hate us, but do so in an endearing and gentle and loving way.

At the end of the day, if you polish a turd, it’s still a turd, Mr. Welby, and pathetic attempts like this to appease those that you discriminate against need to be rapidly flushed down the pan. Separate but equal will not do, nor will this half-baked “compassion”. You do not get to tell me that I am wrong for loving another male and it’s insulting for you to claim the ability to do that “gracefully”.

  7. There need not be any row as what is proposed is *civil* law which contains within it a complete exemption for Christians or any other religious grouping being involved against their wishes? What is there to discuss or row about?

  8. Translated. How can we wallpaper over the cracks in a failing institution?

  9. It’s funny though it alwyas those who are against women bishops and LGBT rights who always win in the CofE.

The church in England needs to reform, update it’s synod voting procedures and be more in touch with British society. At the moment it set it rules according to African society and I just don’t know how they are ever going to disagree gracefully with them.

All Justin Welbys comment has proved is that unlike his numerous predecessors he is Heterosexual. The problem with Williams and Carey et al is that they are secretly Gay and are terrified that being seen as conciliatory to Gay people would expose their true nature which as we all know is also the problem with 99.999% of homophobes. This has been scientifically proven numerous times and is irrefutable. A stark example of this “bash em otherwise they will find out” mentality was vividly displayed by the vile Bishop of Glasgow Keith O’Brien who was found to have abused young priests in his care and was also found to have a permanent Gay lover while he was saying and writing the most horrendous things about Gay people……..

    1. I see no evidence of Rowan Williams being gay.

Is it just me, Archbishop, or does what you are saying sound like it has just dripped out of the back end of a horse?

Most Anglican Bishops and Clergy are “ginger” anyhow.

Actually, does Justin Welby is totaly deluted? Ok he did this comment before the big fight, but he should have already prepared his weapons to sabotage gay right by that time. What an hypocrite
