Conservative Christian lobby group the Family Research Council (FRC) have released guides on their website which urge readers to pray for the US Supreme Court to uphold the nation’s anti-same-sex marriage laws, calling the alternative “an assault against Jesus Christ, Himself.”

On 26 March, the Supreme Court will take up the case of whether to overturn Proposition 8, which in 2008 added a clause to the Californian constitution stating that marriage could only be recognised by the state if it were between a man and a woman, causing widespread controversy.

The Supreme Court is also due on 27 March to hear evidence around the case of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage as between a man and a woman, passed under President Bill Clinton in 1996.

The FRC are urging their members to pray that Proposition 8 and DOMA get upheld in court, and have offered suggestions of prayers to this effect on their website.

The website reveals the FRC’s concerns about the possibility of same-sex marriage being introduced to the US, stating: “For Bible-believing Christians this assault on marriage is not just against society. It is an assault against Jesus Christ, Himself.”

It goes on to suggest three prayers regarding the Supreme Court to its readers.

The first names each of the Supreme Court Justices and asks that they all “be governed by the fear of God and fidelity” to rule against same-sex marriages.

The second asks that the attorneys defending “traditional marriage” have their arguments boosted by “anointing, clarity, effectiveness, conviction and persuasiveness.”

Lastly, the FRC urges readers to pray: “May those arguing on behalf of same-sex ‘marriage’ present their arguments in an inept, confusing, and unconvincing way. May they fail to gain traction in the minds of the Justices. May the right of Californians to amend their state constitution to protect marriage be confirmed by the Court, and may the Defense of Marriage Act be ruled constitutional.”

The prayer guide also offers suggestions of relevant bible passages, including “all” of Leviticus 20, which contains the passage “If a man lies with a man, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.”

Yesterday it emerged unexpectedly that the US Supreme Court will release same-day audio recordings of oral arguments given in the two cases around equal marriage.

Last week, the head of a well-known law firm and top attorney said that he expects the US Supreme Court to resoundingly support equal marriage in both cases.
